Well the story starts with my old starter motor blowing up about 6 months ago. I bought a reconditioned one from heritage MG. You beut, it went well but never quite spun up as fast as I remembered it to. Anyway worked well for ages.

Lately it's been just going wrrrt wrrrt wrrrt instead of cranking like it usually does. Today it totally died on me. So Lillee, the wife and I were stuck out at Auburn and there was no turning at all. Even spanner across the solenoid did nothing. The motor was simply not earthing... So we caught a taxi home to grab my tools and a spare starter motor out from the olde 1275 that let that rod go. Anyway I called on the "Boys" Josh and Brad who eagerly came to my rescue!

Took all of about 5 mins to install the new starter and wow, what have I been missing? this factory starter spins much faster! Never again will I buy "reconditioned" ones. If this one goes, pre-engaged for me

Anyway thanks Guys! It wasn't exactly in your area, but I was desperate as I wasn't sure if this spare starter would work and we may have needed to go to Karcraft I owe you one!!!

Get an MK4 + starter motor. They're pretty much the same as the MK2 Lucas ones, but the brush configuration is less agricultural and they'd had a few decades less abuse done to them.

Mine cost me under $15 and it works perfectly.

Now thats funny ( the clutch starting bit)

But good to hear someone came to the rescue!

Yeah well considering that they had to drive from Macquarie Fields to Auburn to rescue me, I now feel suddenly stupid (nothing new there! )

whats wrong with a clutch start in reverse? before i had my rebuild the ring gear had come loose and so starter motor did jack all.. to leave in the morning id just roll back out of the garage down the drive and hey presto Generally get it going within about a metre of the road

Yep you can clutch start it in Revers..no troubles...at all...I have done it in the alfa a number of times
Parra Road is not always the best place to do a clutch start thou
