The origional rear door rubbers on the vans are extremely expensive... Aftermarket is the only way to go for the rear door rubbers, the after market ones are a little different apparently?

Also how do you "tighten up" the side windows on a traveller..? They rattle too much for my liking.

Don't know if Scotts have them now, but they didn't when I did my Travellers side windows a couple of years back. Ended up getting mine sent from oversea's (ouch!) as there was no one in Aus at the time selling rigid window runners long enough.

Though filling in the panel does sound like an interesting option jill200sx. Is it complicated?

Not really. Pulled out the windows, sanded egdes, trimmed off some more of the metal window surround to give a flat surface to attach the colourbond sheet (that Id cut out with a jigsaw) with sikaflex252. You have to strengthen the side quarter panels. I reinforced mine with 125cms of 40mm aluminium T section each side, glued in place with sikaflex also, clamped with Gclamps while the window is out for 24 hours. Finished it off with tiny amount of filler, sanded primed, painted. I used a melamine cupboard door handle (the round plastic type) to get an even curvature to the join between the existing bodywork and the new panel. I just wrapped the handle in wet n dry and ran it along that edge to give a perfect curve of the same diameter all the way around that panel. I'll take a close-up of what Im talking about, its too hard to describe ;)

But yeah, windowless vans are much cuter I think :)

Vans were not factory made with side windows they were always Cut out. As a matter of fact Vans normally have a " Re-enforcing Rib" from the top of the wheel arch to the gutter seam. When the cut the windows out they always removed these ribs which then made the sides so flimsey. Like someone said the only vans that had factory side windows were the travelers.

The mini K van brochure shows two types of van available one with windows one without. I will try to scan the brochure and post pics of it.

I would say thats a factory option when ordered the BMC Morris Austin dearship may have done it but you could definately purchase it from the brochure with side windows.

Is there any way (or does it need to be done) of strengthening a van up..?? I think that the Traveller has a cross member beam of some sort under the rear seat which makes it feel a little stronger...

Steve your van doesnt have windows does it..? Been so long I cant remember..!!! Was that "factory"

Oh... while I am thinking of it. How do you remove the windows on a traveller..? Do you need to remove the interior and then there are screws to take out those frame things..?? I think that mine is loose cause the screws are loose.... one day I will spend some time with him to work all thsi out.

To remove the rear side windows in the countryman you need to remove the piece of trim inside under the window then unscrew the screws in the bottom chanel and it should come out but i'd need to look on mine to be sure.

Big Bad Bruce our 69 mini K van came with solid sides but someone had put two windows in each side looked very silly we put in one.

This is how the previous owner got it

This is what they did to it

this is after all the bog and there was two ton of it was removed the metal conditioned file finished and repainted. New wiring harness in trim is finished motor just needs painting.

It does work that way Steve but I reckon its easier to take out the top runner screws (or drill them out most likely) remove the upper trim then get a mate to sit inside to catch the glass whilst you push the upper edge from the outside, worked like that for me anyway.

Steve what quotes were you getting..? Paintwork..?

Maybe should do mine at the same time and get two for one price..!

Will check the windows etc this weekend. The thought was that if there was some way to take them out, then there had to be some way of tightening them in..!!

I have had the traveller quoted for restoration 7 coats of paint inside and out underside and top clear polyester protective top coat. Have sponsor for the paint due to the traveller possibly being the oldest still on the road. The traveller has to be done right. Time frame October to March not a 10 week job like Dot and Bruce, done to last a life time.

Are you keeping Toby?
