From the Association for the Study of Peak Oil:
Quote:
The September 2003 issue of World oil reports that Chevron-Texaco plans to dispose of 550 filling stations in the United States; 900 is Asia and Africa; retail and refining operations in Europe, South America, Australia and the Middle East; and exploration and production holding in North America, the North Sea and Papua.

From The Oil Age is Over
Quote:
In 1982, energy companies employed 1.65 million people. By 1999 the number had dropped to 641,000. On average, the largest oil companies eliminated 5.2 percent of their workforce every year between 1988 and 2000.
,
and from the same source:
Quote:
Closing gas stations is a logical step if you expect there to be less gas to sell in the foreseeable future

Locally, there's been loads of stations close over the last five years. Quite big ones too, as well as most of the smaller operators. It may be coincidence, but then again it may be the "canary in the coal mine"

I wouldn't put any money on them being reopened. Why would Mobil sell a station to its competitors?

A mobile close to home was changed into a BP some time ago. Mind you, there were 2 mobils close together.

They have only just got Ultimate, and it's been a BP for years! Iit pee'd me off, i'd drive in, look for anu ultimate, then drive out again. Did it a few times, cause forgot it didn't have ultimate, but was in there the other day to check my tires and noticed they finally stocked it. 8)

You would be surprised how few servos out there are actually owned by an oil company, not an independant operator.

Service stations change branding all the time. If the operator owns the site, he can negotiate whatever deal he wishes for long term supply and branding from most of the oil companies.

Yep, even 91 Octane in Adelaide today was 139.9 a litre. Ouch. Glad thats all my shitter Mini ever gets filled up with.

Its not like its even decent quality fuel. Standard Unleaded elsewhere around the world is almost 100 Octane. Damn we're getting ripped off. And as the government takes a percentage of the cost, they're not gonna complain...

Actually, that's not quite true. You will find the premium equivalent is always around 95-99 and standard unleaded is 91-94. International standards.
