Howdy,

I have problems getting the new motor to fire. (1275, twin hs2s-rebuilt, electronic ignition (minisparc 2100 kit from padstow) )

I have checked fuel (fresh) & it's getting in to the cylinders too (wet on plugs adfter trying to start. new plugs, right gap.

new pre-engaged starter from Heritage MG. Spins 'like a top'

Dizzy is in right way round, static timing is set at 6 degrees BTDC

There is spark from the plug leads, BUT how do I tell if it is strong enough????

My old 998 (using all same ancillaries except the starter was an old dodgy lucas) also was a real bi*%h to start. What stuff should I be checking out????

Please Help.

Are the Leads in the Correct order and/or maybe turn the Dizzy clock wise around more.
Do you have the Earth cable at the Cutch side attached

Gafmo,

Yep leads are correct order (i Triple checked this)

Dizzy is in right orientation.

Earth strap present, all earth connections checked, cleaned etc.

It fires occasionally, and started under heavy choke for a few minutes 2 months back when first in car. It just won't bl@#$y start now!

As far as I can tell it SHOULD be starting

help?

Yeah....chech all the ignition components first...

Has the minisparc 2100 kit from padstow worked OK in the past :?: or have you just fitted it :?: .....symptoms sound like spark..but who knows :?: :D

The only other thing I can suggest is that you eliminate the minisparc 2100 kit from padstow by temporarily disconnecting it and fitting a standard ignition set up. If you can get that to fire up...well you have a "starting point" (get it :!:  ) Does the unit come with some fault finding info or voltage points you can check :?: Have you checked that it is installed correctly

Have the twin carbies been used before :?: if not, are they set up in the ballpark....iaw the Docs instructions (do a search)....good luck :D

Yeah it worked in the past, and was set according to the extremely limited wiring diagram they sent.

The only other thing I can suggest is that you eliminate the minisparc 2100 kit from padstow by temporarily disconnecting it and fitting a standard ignition set up. If you can get that to fire up...well you have a "starting point" (get it :!:  ) Does the unit come with some fault finding info or voltage points you can check :?: No Have you checked that it is installed correctly  as best i can

Yep, they are the original carbs, just rebuilt and set up for an initial start.

Good ideas, I might swap the old dizzy back on (shaft loose as buggery, so not the best, but as you say it might give me a 'starting point') and see how that changes things, Thanks!

More ideas? How do I check the strength of the spark????

Number wise..sorry I'm lost thier too....but pull a lead off and hold it via the end bit and place it near one of the head stud's and you should get a nice fat spark.
While your at it...pull the plugs out and check for a blown head gasket...place thumb over the plug hole and they all should be the same..pressure..just an idea

Thanks, missed a few replies before while typing (two finger typing, old school)

Carbs have new needles good for a 1275 (as a starting point anyway)

Might have been flooding, but the plug was damp after trying to start for about 15 minutes (thank god for a GOOD battery) is this normal?

Jets are two full turns down from the top of the bridge.

New dizzy cap (well 500 miles worth, checked and cleaned anyway)

Brand new 'metro turbo' head gasket, compression tests good.

How fat should a fat spark be? Should I be testing with the end of the plug lead, or with the spark plug attached?

Matt

Don't do that!! 15 mins is way to long....if the plugs got wet on the first couple of attempts ...then guess what :?:

you are flogging a dead horse :!:

Its sounds tedious, and it is, but before you try to start it after you change something like the plug leads (say).....pull the plugs..dry them off/clean them..put them back in and try again....by having clean and dry plugs you have a better chance of starting.

This is a process of elimination...you might have a condensor shorting or dud...go through each of the easily changed ignition components and see if there is any change.....

I would try another set of plugs, an old set will do as long as they are clean. The ones in it now will be wet as... :x
