What do people suggest for floor insulation that both unsulates from noise and vibration and at the same time doesn't cover up and promote rust? I don't really want to paint on any tar based products that will be a bugger to remove in the future if need be. My idea so far would be to strip back the floor and get rid of any rust by cutting it out and then priming the new panels. then getting some car audio sound deadener which comes in strips which u can stick down. Then i'm not sure what to put between that and carpet. I don;t really want to glue carpet down all over, preferably just to attach it at various points to stop it moving.
What ideas do people have?

You could always use velcro strips around the edges. You can get it with adhesive backing.

To stop rust, just make sure no water gets in!

I got nothing under the carpets. All the insulation does is promote rust, IMO. Hell, it's a Mini- they all leak somewhere, sometimes. With no underlay things dry out quicker if the carpet does get damp.

I painted the 850's floor with 2 pack tar epoxy all over, after I welded 2 new front floor pans in. Good stuff- they paint steel boats and water tanks with it..

I don't think my welding was that good- but epoxy is good for plugging weld defects...

Clarke rubber sells 10mm foam sound proofing that doesn't soak up water, but I think water can still get trapped in between the foam and the body and cause havoc so not sure if I will be using it... I use that stuff elsewhere like behind the dash.

foam, rubber, whatever will sweat and cause rust eventually. You need something that will breath as as Kev says woven carpet on its own will let it dry out.

Thanks for all that. As for the plugs in the floor, should the plugs be there or just take them out so water can drain out? Then again water can still get in when it rains. so leave plugs in or out?

Put the plugs in. Otherwise the wheels will chuck water up there off the road in wet weather. OTOH, if it's a Moke...

yer the 850 leaked coolant when it got really hot, it went down the firewall and into the holes and the whole passengers floor was coolant flavoured
