Pretty sure the Pulsar's alternator is basically the same as my EA Falcon, which is 60A. Looks same, plugs are the same..

Clubbie 16ACR alternator was 34A. Earlier Lucas alternators were less.

Falcon taxis and HD tow packs had 75 or 80A ones. Yeah I guess there are bigger ones about too. How much power did you want your Mini to lose, driving it?? :P

<edit> no you don't NEED a Pulsar one, but hey if the Lucas fails, $35 will get a Pulsar one..

Its not exactly a straight bolt on though.....

the pulsar alternator sits very close to the morris grille, and the bottom bracket (for tension adjustment) needs to be custom made as the standard bracket wont reach.

MC_Cush on a UK forum you'd get flamed for not running a topic search coz we just had a huge topic dedicated to the Pulsar alternator with detailed instructions oh how and 68_Delux just put on in I think.

The EA Falcon one is very similar btw but its not the same (I think its E14 when you need the E13 or something) its not as good coz the amperage is lower (Pulsar one is 75A) and the lower mounting point is too far out.

MC look at the page on JAM's site (www.justanothermini.tk) and plus I've posted a detailed description of my conversion a few days ago. BTW you dont have to weld the brackets or make a new one, you can just screw the Pulsar bracket to the old one with a good bolt and fat washers.

I reckon if you are running that many electronic devices and are depending on your spot lights too then the pulsar alternator is the way to go. Get the Bosch N13 alternator. There is a "Horn" thread earlier where Mike details all you need to know about fitting one.

A nice big bosch battery wouldn't also be bad either

a flame without the heat ;) but i was n't asking how to put one on just whether it was necessary...but you will notice that i didn't start up the alternator conversation...:) *glares at matt*

anyway...

if all i'm powering with the alternator (see link) are the lights and the dodgy sound 4 stereo that's not actually working anyway then... whever alternator i have should be ok

here' s my alternator (which gaf tells me is bigger than the normal one)

This Pulsar dizzy thing sounds like a go'er. Anyone want to write up a 'HOW TO' for my website? Since I am getting 200 odd hits a day quite a few people will benifit from it I am sure!!

Cheers.

Kev or I could attempt one... It wouldn't be hard...

That alternator looks like the later clubman type with internal regulator. I had the old 1/2 back cover lucas type requiring a separate regulator it's a POS.

If it aint broke dun fix it!

Something like this then? Kev should be best person to write these sorts of things. I reckon he could write a whole encylopedia of mini tech. NOW THAT'S AN IDEA!!!

Buying the alternator

Look around for the best price on a Bosch N13 Pulsar alternator with some sort of short term warranty (plug it in, if it doesn't work return it will do). Make sure it came from a Pulsar and not a Ford as they are exactly the same but the bottom bracket on the Ford one sticks too far forward and won't fit behind most roundnose grilles.

If you go to Pick n Payless type spare parts places, make sure you also take/ask for the plugs that go with it. The main connection that goes to your ignition coil and back to the battery requires a (bigish) 5/8" fork or ring type spade connector, and the lights/starter connector needs special plastic plug thingy. You can do without for the later, but it's messy as you have to use regular spade plugs.

When you buy the alternator, try to bring your old lucas one with you to compare. Most likely pulley on the Bosch alternator is offset and has a spacer between the alternator housing and the pulley then it may not line up perfectly with your current fanbelt. If possible get the shop to loosen this nut for you, which will save you having to clamp in and undo it using an allen key and a wrench later on.

It starts something like this:

Get in your car
Drive to wreckers
get out of car
go into wreckers
look for Pulsars
can't find any
get back into car
go to next wreckers
go into wreckers
yeh they have a Pulsar
someone has already nicked the dizzy
get back into car
drive to next wreckers........................
