My 998cc drum moke was used to haul a huge arse cage trailer (about one a half times the length and 1.5 times the width) halfway across melbourne when I moved out of home. The trailer itself was a few hundred kg empty and we made two loaded up to the brim trips heh.

My brakes were pretty useless (engine braking like a truck 1km out from any lights) so we did the trips late in the night/early morning and kept it at about 50km/h. Ooh did I have some strange looks driving through melbourne when I dropped off the empty trailer the next day.

I guess driving with a loaded trailer let's you experience an 850 motor.

The 1971 Owners Handbook for the Clubman and GT gives the maximum towing weight as...
406.4kg for the sedans. (Mini Clubman, Mini 1100, Mini Clubman GT)
302.4kg for the van. (Mini 1100 Van)

The towing limits in Vic is the lesser of:
- the max towing weight of the vehicle as specified by the tow car manufacturer (in factory ink).
- max towing weight stamped on the towbar (if any).
- 1.5 times the weight of the tow car.

Page on the VicRoads site:

http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/vrpdf/rdsafe/VSI%2024.pdf

I would carry the Clubman model handbook with you when towing to prove you are within the manufacturers guidelines. If you buy a second-hand towbar it is unlikely to have a towing weight specified. New ones have to by law.

New ones usually have a paper sticker with max. capacity/ball mass. Last untill the first rain :x

Huh? Mine have all had a metal compliance plate welded to the towbar. Maybe that's only some towbar companies.

As a supplier and fitter of tow bars I can check with our manufacturer for Mini towing capacities and Ball weight and I will report back to you. I am pretty sure they do not make them any more but they still might have all the specs. If I can get them to resorect the making of these Tow bars any one after one ? If they can make them I can probably get a good price if I order a few in one hit. Contact me.

Can you still buy these tow bars for the minis new? Or do guys simply find second hand ones or fabricate them up?

EOI in a van one from me as well. I have one already (not fitted) which I am not overly impressed with.

i'd be interested in a towbar depending on the cost.

Are these temp bars or relatively permanent?

Might be good to keep one in storage for when I need to tow stuff around with a roundnose...
