Extremely early 850. 1959 or 1960!

Look for a date on the wiper motor. This should put you in the ball park. Otherwise you could send the numbers etc. to British Motor Heritage and will tell you for certain.

The seat mounts are very early production.

This car better be restored to how it was the day it left the factory, as this is one of the earliest Mini's in the country!

:o Wow, apart from the firewall mod, this is in very good nick for a car of its age.

WOW!! :D

Very early Australian made CKD. 1960 or very early 61 I would say. Same spec as the 1960 one in Geelong which was supposedly the Australian prototype.

It should have different rear radius arms and the wheel centres will probably be riveted to the rims.

Very exciting find!!!

Some more pics here:
http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=11935

The interior is pretty ratty & modified, floor rubber is pretty crap as are the seats, as far as I know you can't get the rubber matting or the same pattern on the vinyl, true?

The goal is for it to be as orignal as possible, is there any reference as to what would have been fitted?

I had a look on ozcooper ( http://www.ozcooper.com.au/paint_codes.htm ) pant guide & it says 60/ 61/ 62 Araluen Blue, also local paint supplier was unable to find code on his system anyone recommend someone in melb/ syd.

Does anyone have a photo of this colour in it's prime (It's pretty nice)

Wiper says 63

Also has slots in front & holes in back???

THINGS I'M ASSUMING ARE NOT ORIGNAL:
1. Antenna - Obviously
2. Vinyl on bottom rail of dash??
3 Oval Speedo - Obviously
4. Wheel trims?? (Say made in hong kong & are not one piece like coopers)
5. Demister - Obviously
6. tacho (Obviously, Actually branded Kmart :) )
7. Heater??
8. some of the cards/ vinyl

Any information in regards to what is/ was orignal with this mini would be of great assistance as i don't really know where to start finding information.

The vynil on the bottom of the dash and the Cooper S type heater are probably original.

The stick on rear demister is a period accessory. (I have a new one still in the box waiting for a home someday.)

The trim is wrong, it should be like the rear parcel shelf. Or see slidey in the For Sale section.

You should be able to find someone with a Mini the same colour. A mate had an 850 that I'm 90% certain was the same colour, and it was identical to the colour used on a Camira (shudder) or something.

Take off something small that has not been repainted and has not faded much The back of the rear numberplate flap is often a good place to try. Then take that to a good auto paints shop and they can compare it to their paint swatches.

Looks a very nice project. No major rust evident?

Hmm, this is interesting! The vinyl on the dash SHOULDN'T be there if it's an aussie production 850, HOWEVER, if what some people are saying is right and it's a very early or even pre-production model, it could even be in English-style Deluxe trim, which is different to aus deluxe, basically an 850 with carpets, heater (so that may be standard!!), and slightly improved seat upholstery. Originally the 850 was sold here with only one trim level, so it may have been a prototype investigation into selling a differing trim level.

Also having that metal slide instead of check straps is rather unusual.

Re the slots in the roof weld though, the english mark 1's style slot was much more rough than that, whereas yours looks like quite a neat rectangle the slot you're thinking of looks more like the work of a good chisel :)

If you have holes one end and those slots the other it may just be an attempt by a previous owner to try and improve roof drainage :D

Only has metal clip on one side

you are spot on with your whats original and whats not if car had that heater as standard it would be a super deluxe which it is not if it had heater as accesory for its age it would be smiths MKI type I'll post pic later (same as in my 1960 traveller).

Car is most definately late 60 wiper motor is not the original. I have a mate with the excact same car and will get you a pic soon as his is infairly good shape.

The master cylinders lend me to say yours is a touch earlier as you have the first type master cylinders which were only on 59 60 and early 61cars hold on to them. your wiper motor should be early type as well if its a 60 I'll post a pic shortly. Have a look at the foot wells if original and a 60s car they will have large drainage plugs which look like the tops of milo tins if not its early 61 I'll post pics of the drainage plugs aswell.

Sorry about not being able to put pics up now but having trouble with camera I need Mikey.

Great find early car what are your plans for it? going to respect it for what it is? Or modify it to your own style and enjoy it?

Steve

thanks for the info Steve and everyone else, plans for this mini will be:

AS CLOSE TO ORIGNAL AS POSSIBLE, i'm most worried about the interior as it seems hard/ impossible to get hold of in immaculte condition.

I'd like to know if the slots are real or not as when it comes time to paint i want to be sure (not that its going to be any time soon).

Short term plans are:

1. Get running & registered
2. Clean up any rust
3. find out what i can about how it should be.
4. Look for interior including rubber floor, seats door & rear trim, wheel arches the lot.

Long term:
5. Respray
