Not just another plug for Brickworx (okay, so maybe it is) BUT I wanted a new donk for the LS...

I have now spent $3000 MORE doing up the ol' A-Series, when i could've just put in a Rover Injected cut... And i would have it done in a week, not 8 months

I can see the allure of a frontcut for someone needing all the bits to convert a mini to 1275, you get the brakes and a few other bits and bobs, its not a straight forward change over to fuel injection as you think, you either have to have the fuel tank or modify the tank and lines to suit and these motors are second hand just like any other second hand engine and need to be checked over just like any other. Aircon sytems will need to be checked as they must come into the country drained of gas and the wiring must be changed to accept the wiring of the late model car. Either way it costs money, the original poster said he already has 7.5 discs so if he buys a front cut he has a set of brakes for sale ( maybe ) or a set for next project, i see figures of $4000 for engine rebuilds but that must be including someone paying for R&R and someone to strip and build, I have just finished a total rebuild of a 1275-1310 including all machining and new pistons, rings, bearings, cam, cam bearings, unleaded head conversion and gaskets and timing chains for $1400 total, with gearbox rebuild and and clutch should come up for about $2000 and I know damn well it will perform as well if not better than a SPI rover motor and last longer ( especially the gearbox). All power to the guys bringing in the Rovers, the SPI was done so they could meet emissions not for performance and were only rated at 60 horsepower, which is fine but no better or worse than any other 1275.
Just my 2c worth, there is more than one way to skina cat or build a mini

I think you wii find that steve sells the SPi conversion with the fuel tank, which has an internal pump. And he can sell the discs he currently has/gonna get with it... Better to ask the main man, Brickworx, for further details. Lots to be discovered... Lots of little bits not yet thought about (Like the fuel tank thing)

If i were building another streeter Mini, I would definately go the Rover injected donk. Its all too easy then. Just plug and play. 60+ Hp is plenty for a cruiser.

I would think the Rover 'box would last longer? A+ has better innards, yes?

But please, do not take my info as 'rule', im just tryin' to help out...

whats the legalities of doing an EFI conversion? I thought it was illegal to bring in efi's now, so does that not also apply to putting in an efi motor from a late model rover into an older car? I am not having a go, just interested as it is an option i would like to explore.

Cheers

Aaron

My understanding is it is legal, provided all the emission junk is present and working...
But as said, don't do it for the power... the standard EFI is no ball of fire.

EFI front cuts are ok to bring in, just not complete cars.

My 2c worth.
I've rebuilt motors, cheap and expensive, but i believe the import motor outways the local one any day... you rebuild an old engine, and then you put back on your old carb, gear linkage, alternator etc... which eventually wear out causing more money to be spent.Even though the motor is good it is let down by the bits it bolts too.
Some fronts may have the odd broken part.
but i'm sure a warranty will cover these items.

As far as prices go... you'll have to pm me, i try not to advertise parts on Ausmini.

My budget is $1500. Based on advice from club members I thought this was reasonable.
My current options are:

1)998 Rover front cut ($2200 delivered) complete minus disk brake setup. This has an air conditioner (Jessie says this is a great plus for her). Newer engine having only done 61000km. Replacement warranty.

2)1100 engine with gearbox, head, starter, dizzy ie all accessories. Tested and checked ($1100 pickup) Under my budget. Bigger engine capacity, No air conditioner.

I wonder if I could make $900 back on parts left over from the frontcut once I have finished with it????

Anyway - thats where I am up to now.

my opinion if it is between an 998 and an 1100 would be go the 1100, I reckon the 998 packed full of gear will be pretty slugish up hills etc and might become annoying reasonably quickly. :(

Another thought/question I am guessing you can bung an 1100 crank and pistons in a SPI 998 :?: not that that is on the cards but I was interested. :D

the factory dropped the 1100, but kept making the 998 so theres gotta be some sense in that.

The 1100 was too rough. 998s are much smoother.

I guess you could easily make $900 back on bits? Frame, Grille, H4s, Thermo Fan, Repeater indicators, Brake booster, Master cylinders etc.... Plenty to sell off to others.
