I started this project by sourcing an existing dash from another club member and tracing the template on to some special card that I bought from a local upholsterer
Special Board $10 enough for 3 (one spare)


Use a very sharp stanley knife to cut out the card. I had to trim the edges of mine after testing the fit in the car. When it fits, transfer the template in chalk to the rear of your vinyl. This shows you where to apply the glue.


I cut my vinyl about 2 inches wider than the actual lining to allow room for the edging. Apply contact adhesive to both the vinyl and card. Most brands need to sit 30 minutes before you join them.

Trim the edges of the vinyl and cut little tabs so you can fold the edges nice and tidy. Once again apply adhesive to both surfaces. As you glue your tabs pull them tight on the edges of the card.



This is the first card that I made. It has a couple of bubbles that flatten out but not bad for a first attempt. The second one was even better.


The finished product in the car. I also made a vinyl shelf cover.

one thing that i would change, to remove the bubbles is not glueing the A surface. Also adding 3mm "door trim" foam just on the A surface will make it all sit nicely.

I was thinking of making a dash, but I love how you can just put stuff anywhere unlike the modern dash.

One tip though that you probably did not know and that is to smoothing out the bubbles is easy.. All you need is one of those tiny metal rollers that you can purchase from any fiberglass shop. They are used for smoothing out the bubbles when you soak fibreglass matting in resin and also for applying resin onto the fiberglass. They work a real treat and get the rid of the bubbles easily as I have used one in the past for this kind of work and other things..

Maybe if join the two pieces up slightly a bit more 'wet' it will give you more time to smooth out the bubbles

I got quoted just over $100 for someone else to do this job. All up it cost me $32 and a few hours. That included a big ass piece of carpet underlay!

I will be more than happy to supply a template for the job to anyone on ausmini for the cost of a bit of cardboard and postage. But I won't make them up because I really do believe every mini is different. I had to trim my template for ages before it fit perfectly.

The one in the photo is the first one I made. The second one had no bubbles because I smoothed them out while the glue was still tacky. Good advice!

A bit of foam would have made the finished product look even more schmick - more good advice!

Yea that temp gauge does look bad. I have got a smiths gauge that I should have put in while I had the dash apart
