OK so i have a motor that needs running in. i have previouly run-in motors nice and slowly,. and they just break.

I have heard rumours/read stories that the best way to run in a motor is hard and fast "if you run it in hard it will go hard"

so whats the go? and for how long do i have to do it? do i ave to let it idle for any specific period of time?

rev limit???

ta, Dylan

vary the load, don't rev it til lits warm.. give it a quick squirt (when warm) every now and then. DON'T push your motor till it has warmed up.. this is most important.

make sure that each time that you drive it the motor reaches its operating temperature and you keep it there for at least 10 minutes. (probably higher temp then usual)
Drive to the conditions, don't hammer the throttle when doing low rpm.

The idea is to let things bed in and not let your bore glaze up.
change your oil at 3000kms
tighten your head after 1000kms...
but like you said... every body is different.

If you don't want to be changing the rings in 3 years bed in for first 1000miles changing oil every 250miles placing no load on the motor not exceeding 80km varing speed s. After 1000 to 5000 speed limits not so much a worry but still take it easy. after 5000 no worries.

If you want to glaze the bores have a smokey engine and replace the rings in three years drive the crap out of it your the one paying the bills.

This is a complete rebuild?

What did the mechanic/engineer say and what warrenty do you have on the motor?

Or home job?

cheers

steve

Put it on a Dyno (engine dyno not chassis dyno) before bolting it back in the car.

Ready to go then 8)

also you have to run the cam in first ..10-15 minutes at around 2000 rpm

Then go climb a few hills to bed those rings in, before they glaze up...

I have just done this....

I ran the cam in, as mentioned. Then I just found a few big hills, and ran it up them in 4th gear......the motor struggles to pull up the hill, but apparently that helps bed in the rings.

After that I have been driving it quite hard.....no pussy footing around......seems to be going well :D

pretty much as everyone has said.....BUT make sure you dont bed the
cam in and leave it idling on the spot as this willjust glaze the bores.. drive
it.... as people have said, once driving try and find a nice long hill, put in in a gear
higher then what you would normally put the car in (eg if you would go up the hill
in 2nd, out the gear in third) do it so that the car does not labour badly, but so
that you can go up the hill and then put your foot flat to the floor... this
forces the rings to push out and bed in properly...

well thats what mini spares told me to do with Vivians old motor....

I was wondering what people thought of this article? http://mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

I have seen it mentioned in a number of places as the way to go.

Talk about a dozen different ways to bake a cake. Everyone has their favorite idea. If someone else built the motor run it in the way they say, then if it stuffs up it is on them.

Its pretty easy really, don't flog it to much and don't baby it, just drive it normally, after you run in the cam and give it a couple of run up through the gears to bed the rings just drive it. The running in period for them when new was to allow the block and head castings to stabilise ( cast iron ) and as yours is probably an old block and head it won't make any difference now, the old drive at x speed and dont do this and don't do that is long over, give it 500-1000 miles change the oil check everything is still attached and tight and don't worry. With modern machining everything should be pretty well damn right, better than when it was first built at the factory.

I will confirm this as I just called the fellow in Queanbeyan who did the machining on my donk. Run it as normal within the speed limit, take off hard at the lights up to the speed limit then back off, highway driving up to the speed limit using the gears through a full rev range(he said be sensible - no 8000rpm though) and back off to 90kph. Then back up to speed limit and back to 90kph(do this about 5 times). Terry said that you run it up as normal and bed the cam in, drive it as you would normally and not over-revving it.

40 years experience and many mini and corvette motors cant be wrong.

Proof in the pudding I suppose - wait for the bang when I crank it in a couple of weeks...

Hooroo
