Here's my current method. please feel free to add or remove any unecessary steps

1. run hot
2. drain
3. drain oil filter. fit back on
4. top up with diesel
5. run engine. be careful, it gets very hot very easily
6. drain diesel
7. fit new filter
8. top up with new oil

Penrite Classic Light for the matic and '73 CB,
Classic Medium for the manual
Penrite HPR10 for the civic and prado
BP diesel with the catchy slogan "now cleaner"

every 1500ish miles for the matic (like every 5months)
every 3000miles for the 1100 clubmanmoke
every 8000km for the civic and prado

Dunno about the diesel bit :o I always use el cheapo woolworths oil (or similar) to do the flushing. It's just as cheap as diesel, but at least it offers some kind of lubrication.

Are you a chemist Duc? (i am guessing based on your description of rusting bosted previously)

I wouldn't bother with the diesel each time either. Once was a good idea. You don't need it any more.
BTW it DOES have some lube properties..
The Silver City Comet (diesel railcar) train that ran from Parkes to Broken Hill from the late 30s until the `70s had a very early `twin-disc' brand auto transmission. The lubricant it used was diesel fuel. Yes really! (I worked on it.) ATF wasn't invented until many years after W W2. 8)

Horses for courses. Mini engines are designed to run on mineral oil. same reason we tell everyone not to use synthetics :!:

you were working on those engines from the 30s to the 70s

I know diesel is a lube for some engines - like two stroke diesels. you don't have to add two stroke oil to the diesel for those, unlike a two stroke petrol engine

Doing a diesel flush every time you change the oil is a bit overkill. Do it by all means, but I wouldn't bother doing it every time.

Diesel is an oil, so will lube a little, but make sure the engine doesn't run any faster than idle!

I worked on the Comet engines and transmission in the mid 60s during my apprenticeship. It had 4 Detroit Diesel 6/110s in the power car, coupled to 2 transmissions.
I also worked on the later railcars which had 6/71 Detroit diesels.

BTW, 2 stroke GM diesels (like these) have oil in the sump and a normal lube system, they don't draw a charge into the crankcase like petrol 2 strokes do:
There's a row of inlet ports right around each of the cylinders at BDC, these are fed air from a Rootes type blower at about 3psi. The 4 exhaust valves are in the head, and all open together.
So, it works like this- the ex valves open before BDC on the power stroke, the incoming air scavenges the exhaust gases up and out the exhaust valves, which shut just before the air ports are covered. So cylinder is now full of air.
Then just before TDC (on compression stroke) the fuel is injected, ignites and the power stroke begins.
Back in the 60's a 6 litre 2 stroke diesel had the same power as a 12 litre 4 stroke one (without a turbo). It was also half the size and weight. 8)

<edit> Later Detroit Diesels had a turbocharger as well as the blower... :P

When I reassembled my engine at the start of the year I flushed it out using GTX and some Nulon engine flush stuff, it worked quite well. Followed the instructions then dumped the oil and filter and put new oil in, no dramas. I personally wouldn't put diesel through my motor, but then again I probably wouldn't add meths to my fuel tank either.

I do my oil changes whenever I can be bothered. I don't have an odometer so I can't go by miles (not like the speedo was calibrated anyway). Usually do it every 3 months but sometimes I am a month (or two!) late. But when you go through a pint of oil a week oil changes seem pretty pointless anyway

I use diesel to initially wash out gearboxes and motors before rebuilding. It's good for getting sludge off. That's it!

Gafmo's K box is undergoing `the treatment' as I write...

mick im a biomed eng student, i also tutor chemistry and theres a fair bit on rusting

i do the diesel thing for dirty engines only, like if the oil is extremely dirty/black or when im converting the unknown oil to penrite. the next time i do the matic (its already converted) itll just be the filter n oil
im iffy about using foreign oil to flush coz some oil bottles say "not compatible with other oils"

diesel is also thinner so will clean out shite from places normal oil wont get to

anto haha

doc youre an asset

Gee Doc I wish I had more time I'd come over and take notes on stuff you're doing!

I dunno about flushing EVERY time either... it's overkill and not necessary after first time. In fact I would only do it once and only if i thought it was sludgy...

I haven't done it to my car yet, just changed oil once, ran it for a few weeks and changed the oil again. It's now clean and clear... but it's making me think...

one thing you all forget is diesel is not only oil but also has a cleaning agent (soap) in it yes that is why diesel foams as you put it into the tank
