pretty standard for a mechanic, office skills are rarely their forte, I find the best way with mechanic is to pay in cash and drop off a carton of beer every couple of jobs. They start to associate you with free beer. Jobs get done quicker and cheaper, your rush jobs start to get done in front of other peoples, they check one more place for that 2nd hand part you need...

Trust me it works!

haha

nuh theres nothing wrong with the local mechanic here,
I fully trust him and i know hed be doing the best job
they just moved workshops, and i noticed in the other one, not up yet, but there were a whole lot of Bible verses and pictures of scripture and religion, so they are 'good' people, yes. It was the mechanics in Launny that were slow, as he told me today

but all i got today was the complete list of things that i need.
As follows.
Pistons,
rings,
main bearings,
B/E bearings
Thrust washers
Gasket kit
Timing chain
oil pump
Small end bushes
Cam bearings
Valve guides
Exhaust valves
Water pump,
Cam thrust plate,
Clutch kit
and then i need a new crankshaft, as the 1100 crankshafts are very very scarce here

And i got told why, There used to be an 1100cc mini racing class in tassie, The launny mechanic was telling the local one here, and he said all the cranks had been prioritiesed to the racers back then, and now there is the shortage, he had a few that he may crack test, and if they are fine then good, but if not ill have to go searching.

So now the mission is to get prices on the complete list,
and the i can compare my prices with the mechanics and decide which way to go.

hmmm
tell me if i want the different cam, does it need different bearings,
what does a 'gasket kit' consist of, i dont know,

Also
can some people tell me of any reliable parts suppliers that might have many of the lot of the parts above, that have an ordering system on the web, (cause its easier) So i can sort them out, i know of the K one,

But if not, i might just have to plonk a 1275 (+++) in there, anyone got a good one for me???
ready to bolt in and go?>>?

So thats the end of the story for now

1100 crankshafts are not rare on Real Australia - I gave away 2 complete engines for a carton each (still waiting miniVan  ). Sorry but I've got no spares left.

Gasket set contains every gasket to put the entire engine together, plus probably a couple you won't need.

After you pay for that lot$$$ you will want to look after it :)

hey there Camel,

Sorry to hear of your hassles - sounds like you're having fun by the truck-load.

Anyway mate, I'll be seeing my local Mini mechanic tomorrow - throw around a few ideas with him 4 u . I know he has 3 or 4 cranks on the shelf gathering dust, but I don't know what size they are - what engines they are from.

I'll also ask him for some prices on the other stuff you need. Or, you can give him a call - Bellarine Mini Centre, phone number is 03-5248 4092

Poeee knows this guy - he's not in the business of making a profit but is more interested in keeping Minis on the roads.

Hooroo

well
the old mini wasnt an 1100,
but talking to an ebay member about a weber carby they had, they are from NW Tas too, and it turns out they have offered me this .
Quote:
The motor is 60 thou over ,new pistons, balanced Lightened polished and
crack tested crank, new Double row timing chain. new pater pump, rebuilt oil
pump. new gasket kit, mild sports cam, ported head, extractors. the block
has been decked to lift compression. all new ACL bearings and Hastings
rings. The machine work was done by cisco in Devonport a few weeks ago. that
was $605.00. I have spent $1500 so far including parts , not including the
sidedraught weber.. But thats not too bad consdering an off the shelf 1100
from mini world is about $3500-4500 depending on build.
If there are any parts you need give us a call,
Or, You can have the lot for $900 If you interested..

So that is something that i very very need to consider? I would think?
Can someone tell me if the brands and stuff are fair enough for the price.

Then it seems all i would need were the water pump, the clutch, well i think that is all? isnt it?
Ill have to ask if the weber comes with it and the head is good to go and whatever else i can think of, and that may be good, its an 1100 also if it didnt say, and then id have my stuffed one if anything goes wrong with this one :!: :?:

Well
i talked to the owner of the motor on the phone the other day
He told me the stuff listed above, yet im 95% sure the carby isnt included, and i didnt ask about warranty or reciepts as i may have should.
But the guy is a chef, i could prolly find where he works, (if anything was wrong with it :!:  :P ) But he said he had built about 6 mini engines,
and has heaps of cars, just got GTS Monaro, had LC XU-1 im sure he said, XY Ute and some other crazy things, and he has about 5 cars sitting around,

But i dunno why he can sell itto me for that cheap, maybe hes getting discounts somwhere, i dont know
that makes me a bit too nervous to just say, SOLD, to him,
He hasnt finished building it yet, it will be about 2 weeks

Talking to my mechanics, they know it was also a good buy, but just concerned for me, because they just think there is something 'strange' going on,
But the worst that could happen is its a dud somehow? Then i strip all the bits down and still have parts worth that much money.

Also the mechanics did not like the idea of decking the block.
The old mechanic was really really dissapointed, he sighed and put his hand in his head :( it was funny really, he was rather distraught about the situation,
but he said about the compression, with the fuel id need, and 'pinging' (which of cause i dont really know much abuot)

Would it be wise to get the motor with only the 95RON fuel available to me, (its only got standard valves?

i think im almost close to just tell the bloke i want to buy it,

If i dont, he is going to put it on ebay, where i suppose it may go for a lot more :P :?:

Well

After emailing the bloke last evening, he writes back at 1230 am
he works 7 days a week, has no time

has many many cars to play with,
so he has offered me everything, except the Pistons,
For $500.

Included is the ported polished head, LCB extractors, crank, pumps, gasket kits, chains, and the rest (the only thing is i am not knowledgeable enough to know if he has given everything that he previously stated i could have :P , i mean i could get home and not have some bearings or this part , and id have no idea :P)
and $600 bucks worth of machining work on the block,
and
I will also be offered a free 1/1/4" SU manifold
For the $500.

All i would need is the pistons, which he informs me are $170 on ebay
So i do not know if my local mechanics build motors?
I have not run this idea past them, But

How about me have a go  8)
I mean its all text book stuff is it?
Surely a blind echidna could do it?

AH bugger me, i should get in the old C-rona now and go and get the stuff shouldn't I?
I should get it after work tomorrow?
But maybe ill have to wait till the weekend.

Hmmmm

sounds like fun?

Hmmm... What to do, What to Do

the first thing to say is the Block is already +60thou so realy it is realy to its last and if something was to go a miss with the crank Pistons or Rings the engine will be no good to anyone. But In saying that You can get one more size up for +60thou but it will be expencive to get the Pistons :?

$600 for the work on the Block sounds very rich and I just don't see it, but it may just be the case in Tassy

Did he say what size the Webber was? did he say what grind at the Big end and rods were? And how much has been taken off the the block? and what head is it?

It may be a good buy or it could be a cheesecake one.
Some time you have to take risk to get some where and some times you end up in the Poo

There is no carby with it in the end,
the machineing work was the boring decking and head porting, thats just what he said.
I asked how much the compression been lifted, he said the stock 1100 was about 8.5 and it was only just enough to get the bumps out, he said not much over 8.9.

Everything this is a risk,
from my talking he seems a really good bloke, he is the head chef in a restraunt, i called him there to chat, and he had a mini that this was going to go in, but he sold it, complete, new tinted windows, new carpets, and so on, for $100,
seeing as he has too many cars,

Well, if i buy this, there is a Reasonable chance that ill get out of this with a sub $1,000 repair job :!: And that is good. considering my motor alone would be around 2K,
And, if i get this one, then id stil have my block anyway

It does all come down to the risk, and its just so hard and annoying to know what to do, cause i want it back quick quick :( :P But of cause i dont want a crap job.

what am i supposed to do :? :)

Any chance of getting the Chef to spanner it together for you - and teach you how along the way. pay a bit more - learn a lot more, or barter at him with fresh vegies.

we'll the $650 for the Machine does not sound so bad if that included the Head also..and as he has calculate the comprestion, he has a good idea of whats going on

As you have said, If you purchase this engine you will still have your old one anyways, for next time.

I would not put it together if I was you to save money as something will go bang and you will lose faith in Mini's. Spend the money and get one of these guys to do it for you. This way if something does go wrong you can take it back to them. If you can spend the time with them while they are rebuilding the engine for you, you will learn a lot
