there seems to be alot of threads about rebuilds lately.

Im looking for a price guide, to understand wat ill be spending.

ive spoken to some engine rebuilders, and surely they're pulling my leg

so i want to:
clean, rebore ,deck my 1100 block and 12G295 head.
grind crank.
fit new bearings, pistons, rings.
and, i guess..have them build it

Clean & Rebore HOne etc depending on where you go I'd guess $150 to $300 ??
Gring Crank around $300
RE13 Cam regrind about $100 (plus cam to regrind)
Pistons & Rings $300 to $400 for Good Hepolites
Bearings etc a coupla hundred
Screw together upwards of $400 depending on quality/time taken
Dyno Run-In and tune same again.

expensive hobby this one. :?

Um... This one still hurts

Had a tired 45DCOE Weber-fed 1293 to start with.

Now it is:
Still 1293cc.
Balanced
Lightened
New crank
Kent 286MD Scatter Pattern (Cam)
Head now unleaded, pocket port and polish. (Crack tested and all the rest of it)
Newbie pistons (Hypatec)
Full Gasket set
Braided oil lines
13 row oil cooler
4 N.O.S. Synchros
New exhaust. and again.
New Vizard-spec 3-1 extractors
Dyno time

Almost no change from $5000. 53.7kW @6550 rpm. (At the wheels)

But no, definitely NOT a cheap hobby

well i have spent close to $6k on my motor including
purchase price, parts and GR building it! but it is so worth it
to spend the money getting it done right, it is so smooth and powerful!

but yeah i would say from avg mini place i would guess $1500=$2k for
a hone and bearings and screw together

Definately the most expensive part of a mini.... depending on your performance goal....

Mine has hit 4500 in parts alone, including the supercharger setup. This does not include the bits that I have obtained via swaps and deals (about another $1000 worth)

Am expecting to spend another 1000 on the head, 250 to hone the block, 200 on new pistons, 700 on fuel injection, 800ish on the gearbox..... the list still goes on.

...dont forget to add on the cost of dyno tuning too......

Change from 9 grand??? Doubt it.

I paid a respected mini guy in canberra 2.6k for a drop it off and i'll pick it up when it's all brand new (engine only) build. Still going srtong after 20k of thrashing and it's only done 2 copper gaskets in this time. the first was 3 days after the build (replaced free of charge) and the second only a couple of weeks ago.
since i got it built i got some lcb extractors (free from a good mate  ) and 1 3/4" exhaust $170 and a full carbie re-build + tune for $500.

I have 2 motors that have nearly cost me a fortuine but my every day driver is
1380
new pistons (omega)
EN40B crank shaft with rebuilt jounnals
S rods
GR cam shaft
GR head with 37.2mm inlets and 29.4 ex
guides
springs
New Gears in gearbox with 4 pin diff
vernier timing belt set up
2 core radiator from UK
new 1.75 carb
GR inlet manifold
I would say its a GR spec motor with 85BHp at the wheels goes like snot.
i dont think i would have any change from $10k\
bonus is its still road driveable and is used everyday as a road cor.

OK.........finished rebuilding a standard 1100 last week and the whole project cost me the huge sum of $910......yes........less than a grand.

Here's how I did it.

Brand new pistons and rings.......$200 (not hepolites).

Block....acid cleaned, decked, brand new cam bearings put in for me, engine number re-stamped, crankshaft ground for 10 thou oversize main and big end bearings.

Gaskets - all the usual ones.

Labour - did a lot of it myself but did need Peters help quite often.

Gearbox - all I did was to clean the existing one as it was rebuilt a couple of years back. It's working well and there was no wear or anything that said "rebuild".

Head - again, I bought a re-co'd one just a couple of months ago for $450 so perhaps that should be added on, but the total cost is still only $1360.

OK - all up, it took two weeks from go to whoa and the cost was good.

If you can do most of the labour yourself, this is where you will make a big saving. AND have friendly local mini mechanic/enthusiast.

you guys are crazy...

but im glad we're getting alot of minis out there that will kick rice ass. 8)

ive been told $295 for head reco:
cleaning, facing, seat cutting, and a put back together, with new valves.

i wouldnt mind buillding the block myself.. its not all that hard ay??
if i can do this myself, im saving a $880...apparently the engines are built twice..and documented..lol. he said its 12 hours labour..hard to believe.

you just dont slap a motor together you have to cheak clearences tolerances
there is a lot involved i'm learning atm slowly building my motor

but its an 1100, not a 1380 or someting of an oversized monster bore.
i could probably do a 998 or 1100 for my self for $50 if i just used 2nd hand parts all the way but were talking new parts and high spec competition parts that are desined to last a little longer.

there's $40 worth of gaskets in the head alone

Your going to go to the trouble of pulling out a motor, completely strip it down and then put in worn parts? Sorry but I think that is madness

EDIT ADDED: Opps meant to say - theres no difference in time, materials or parts required between a small or large bore motor recon - just a difference in size and possibly quality of parts used at times

Are people rebuilding their gearboxes when doing motors?

They do share the same oil and are all in one?

Wouldn't you do both to ensure longevity and reduce costs down the track when one screws you due to the other? Either old box destroys your new motor or your new motor kills the old box and diff.

Easier to do it right once rather than risk major expense down the track if paying for labour.

If using workshop to do rebuild find one that gives warrenties on work. Some people will say you won't get a warrenty but good workshops will and do give them.

My motors came with full list of parts and reciepts for parts sent for lightning and balancing , tuning information (dwell/ tappet clearences) for rebuilt distributer to match waggot mild lift cam and 6 month-30 000 mile warrenty on mechanical components.
Under $2000 including the $80 for them to spanner it together cheap insurance that $80 is.

My advice is if your going to spend big dollars on a motor do the box as well.

Steve
