Okay with my A+ 998, i think i'll go the 731 route for cam.
Does it have a kinda lumpy idle?
I've been told its a road rally spec item, whatever that means

So yep, whats this cam like.
Any recommendations.
Its going with a weber, and i like my brap brap lumpiness 8)

Prices too?
is this cam available new?
or what is the cost of a grind on a standard cam.

cheers.
will.

The 731 would be my most favourite "budget" small bore cam. Yep, its as lumpy as your grandma's gravy  Have a listen to Bob's morrie when he brings it to the workshop next. He has one in that.

Yeah a 731 is OK in smallbores, I ran one for years- but there are better ones about now.
RE13 is the best sports one I've found. Way better midrange and top end.

Umm.....sorry about the dumb question guys - I know there are all sorts of different cams but how do you tell one from the other???? Is it just experience??

Cheers

Pretty much is. I've had about a dozen different cams in roadgoing Minis over the years.
All the cam grinders say theirs is the best, but a dyno is the great arbiter.
At our last Dyno day pretty much the top 10 (except for Ron's) all ran an RE13.

Thanks Doc. Does a RE 13 cam keep the valves open for a longer period of time or something???

Cheers

A bit more duration, bit more lift, bit more opening & closing acceleration.
731 is 268* duration and .252" lift (at cam),
RE13 has a little more duration but but a lot more lift (.290" at cam).
If you use `em with 1.5 rockers, to avoid coil bind you will need C-AEA526 valve springs (which have 1 less coil).

willy, the idle is about the same.

I used to have a 731 in my hottie 998 van, willy.

When it was out of tune, it sounded like a bloody rotor. Brap, brap, brap.

But that was with a 12G295 head, and twin 1-1/4 SUs. That thing used to go alright for a 998.

having been the only cammy motor i've driven, it gets going from about 2500-3000rpm
with the real power kicking in at 3000
still going nicely to 6000+
its an old works rally cam, so its been surpassed by more modern profiles.
the idle is a little bit lumpy, but not enough to piss me off..
i hate lumpyness and general lack of smoothness.
