Is stripping and priming an expensive venture? And can you drive around a bit with the car in primer? (is it waterproof?)

I have mate who is learing the art of spraying and apparently is looking for experience in as many car as he can.

So i figured if i paid (a pro) to strip and prime my car and then got the mates rates in the painting, i'd save m'self a bit o cash.

Does this sound like a feasable plan?

(maybe i could time it so my car is in primer for the next minis at the mill :) )

IMO I would be getting the mates etc to strip and prime and the pros to paint it.

stripping is the donkey work so the paint shops won't mind if you do it the painting bit is the bit that worries me. :(

AFAIK primer is porous so cars should be kept clean and dry once they have been primed and not left too long before paint goes on.

You may find that the pros won't be interested in stripping and priming the car since that is the cheap part of the job. They'd probably rather do the lot.

You could get it acid dipped instead of stripping it. Some people love it, some people hate it. It will cost you around a grand though I think.

I took a week off work and went at mine with the paint stripper and wire brush. The end result still needed sandblasting.

you'll find that most panel shops will only do the whole lot or nothing because they don't know how well you have prepped the body and don't want to be blamed if the paint comes off soon after due to bad prep by the owner.

my morrie is being sanded/ stripped back at the moment...
while i was at work today my mum started it and she is doing a good job too i might add.

i was given advice that if you want to get paint off without the blisters on your skin from stripper you should use brake fluid! this is more effective and cheaper than stripper as you use less quantities for the same surface area

i am gonna get some brake fluid tomorrow so i can get the roof finished and primed!

cheers
matt

use gloves? and pour it onto the panel, and then use a brush to move it. otherwise it flicks everywhere.
Wear safety glasses too.
After you have put the stuff on the panel, put newspaper over the top of it and damp it with a spray bottle.
when the paper dries on the surface then you can peel the stuff off.
use a CUP wire brush in your drill (so that it flicks to the sides and not towards you) to clean the residue off.
dont let the stuff dry onto the panel.
wash off with water, dry asap, wipe de-oxidine over panel, then use prepsol to clear bare metal, then prime (if 2pac) or get a spray can of etch primer and 'dust' the panel.

Deoxidine removes heat and rust scale, other acids and oils and more, refer to this link for more info. http://www.chemicalcontacts.co.za/acid.htm

i have now got the roof of the minor all primed up! :)

i am very happy with it, my mum and i just sanded the whole lot back to bare metal and then went over it with brake fluid- this didnt get off any paint off but it clear up very minor surface rust. i used filler primer not etch primer because that is all i had it has come up a treat and i only got one paint run, which was easily sanded off. i am hoping to have the whole car primed in the next three weeks ready for the final paint job. the final colour is gonna be 'midnight blue' i am also gettin all the chrome bits and peices re chromed!

next step after that is to replace the master cylinder for the brakes, then i might be able to stop my new shiny morrie

then it is on to the interior!! new carpet and a few odd bits and peices.

should be nice in the end- i am looking forward to it!!
:)

Ones near us are happy for us to the the stripping to bare metal and give it a coat of primer then give it to them they take the primer back off anyway with some thinners etc and then they do any panel repairs and then deoxidine, prime and paint.

Also if we couldn't get all the fiddly bits it goes to the sand blasters to get things like sills and the engine bay done. This was with the little brothers 260Z and they tend to warp panels easily if the sand blaster does big flat panels like wise he doesn't use a wire brush on the large panels (stripper only)
