I have recently bought a MK 11 Coope S wihich I think may be "Police Special".
Are they more valuable?
Is there any listing of chassis number that can confirm this?

Not really, there seem to be a fair few (usually NSW) ex-Cop S's. One of the problems with identifying them is that spec level is generally not consistent.

I looked at 2 "expolice" while i as looking for my current car and there was nothing about them which indicated anything special, except that one had an upgraded electrical system and the other a fire extinguisher - but these could easily be later installed.

Unless there is some kind of register for such vehicles also (which im damn sure there aint) then there is little way of knowing what was and what wasnt - production years and car numbers can still be a bit over the shop (i looked at a 68 and a 70) so i dont think it was like.. a run of 20 successive cars from BMC or anything.

Congrats on your purchase tho - I really would like to own an S at some point, i eventually bought on condition and value rather than specification so I have a K instead. Not to worry!

i have just recently bught one too. and know of one other. will pick the brains of that guy at some point. But the person i thnk who will have most knowledge on this will be ronmini. hopefully he will enlighten us shortly

I think the parts they had that made them stand out were removed from the cars when they were de-commisioned. Things like the speedo for example.

Does it still smell like bacon inside?

Ok here are a few tell tail signs for NSW police minis, two srew holes on pasenger side lower dash rail where the radio was fitted, two screw holes in lower dash panel in front of driver where the special speedo was fitted and two screw holes in the passenger kick panel where the fire ex was, and the areial hole in the middle of the roof which in most were not very well repaired. Under the bonnet they had twin 1 1/2 inch SU's the only visible difference, they had a slight porting job and a different cam from standard, dealers could order an option called the police pack and you got the engine mods, if you knew the right dealers you could also order any special tuning bit right up to 8 port crossflows Mark Webbers dad and grand father were one down here who would do it and his dad told me they did a few with all the goodies

Like to add,
On a mk 1 Cooper 'S' they had additional thick yellow wires in wiring harness (for siren I believe)
Lowered seat brackets.
on mk 2, additional red light on speedo binnacle for hand brake

Yeah ask him about the one the cops chased, they reckon he was doing about 120mph when he came unstuck in Warramanga and hit a tree it was late 70s, I saw the car on the towwie and it was about 5 foot long and Alans spares guy at Bridge Motors told me they had just supplied the guy with a 8 port.

NSW Police cars also had two holes drilled in the welding seam cover on the "A" pillaron each sidenear the top of the windscreen where the alloy mesh sunvisors were fitted to them

Interesting Jon....I used to work with a fella (who is still around) who did his apprenticeship in the Cowra dealership....he swears they fitted crossflows and split webers to a couple of pursuits in the late 60's at the request of the local cops.

If you think about it, thats when Falcon GTs and Torana GTRs were starting to appear so they might have been trying to extend the life of the Minis....before eventually going Torana XU-1 mechanicals in GTRs.

Its off the thread but.....
We know the local highway patrol guy socially and while i havn't been naughty traffic wise we are reasonably friendly.

He has told me that he is uncomfortable with the current pursuit cars. They are just too quick and too powerful. He has gone sideways a couple of times at high speed and it scared him. Going sideways on a country road is scary because awfully large trees line the road. This is not just hanging out the tail, this is three parts gone.

He would much rather a more nimble pursuit car such as a bini or a WRX or similar because in all but a couple of circumstances they would deliver the goods without the drama.

Was that car for sale in Brisbane ? The Mk11 you just bought.
