Interesting Jon....I used to work with a fella (who is still around) who did his apprenticeship in the Cowra dealership....he swears they fitted crossflows and split webers to a couple of pursuits in the late 60's at the request of the local cops.

If you think about it, thats when Falcon GTs and Torana GTRs were starting to appear so they might have been trying to extend the life of the Minis....before eventually going Torana XU-1 mechanicals in GTRs.[/quote]

Mick

There is always stories of hotted up police cars but I have yet to see one, they would of had to pay for it out ouf there own pocket, the dealers were lucky to get paid for normal servicing and repairs, as for the toranas they were just stock GTRs no XU1 mods, before a cop could use a pursuit vehicle they had to undertake a driving course and if they couldnt pass they were not allowed to drive the pursuit vehicles, most could drive pretty well, better than your average hood

I had a tryst with the sister of a guy (back then mind you) who was an apprentice (and then a mechanic) with the old government motor garages in ultimo. He told me lots of stories about the police cars that went through there. As stated, they were not hotted up beyond order specs. That is ; twin 1 1/2 SU and a cam option plus police needs (radios etc). The GTRs (and later chargers) were the same. As they came off the line but built to a spec.

The police used to strip primary gears for some reason in the minis and in one case, chased a dirt motor bike across paddocks until a hidden stump took out the gearbox and the floor to a point behind the seat cross member.

Not really, there seem to be a fair few (usually NSW) ex-Cop S's. One of the problems with identifying them is that spec level is generally not consistent.

I looked at 2 "expolice" while i as looking for my current car and there was nothing about them which indicated anything special, except that one had an upgraded electrical system and the other a fire extinguisher - but these could easily be later installed.

Unless there is some kind of register for such vehicles also (which im damn sure there aint) then there is little way of knowing what was and what wasnt - production years and car numbers can still be a bit over the shop (i looked at a 68 and a 70) so i dont think it was like.. a run of 20 successive cars from BMC or anything.

Congrats on your purchase tho - I really would like to own an S at some point, i eventually bought on condition and value rather than specification so I have a K instead. Not to worry!

Nothing wrong wif a K ...

One of my "S"s is """meant""" to be an Ex Police car, & it certainly has some funny little things that point at it being so,,,

I`m no X-Spirt tho & i certainly don`t "claim" it to be so, just know what i know about the car from an old copper who used to own the thing a few guys before me.

the way i look at these things is that the only "REAL" way it can be prooved to be a genuine example is to chase back through all the previous owners & even maybe the rego records,,,hard to do tho these days, may well be too long a tril to follow

There really is many many people out there claiming their "S" is ex-police,,,but when it comes to the crunch , most admit that it is only "police Spec"...which is an entirely different kettle of fish, easy to fit your "S" or even "Pretend "S"" with "police Spec" items, way too dam easy & then easy enough to just simply claim it to be a "Real" one

i`m not going to ever profess to know diddly squat about which "S" is genuine poilce car or not,,,too dam hard, & i really don`t think i`m ever going to believe anyone who does, unless they have previous owners list &?or rego docs to prove it

so,,,there you go,,,that`s just my take on the subject

Oh!!! & i`ve also been told (a long time ago by quite a few poilce officers of the time) that not only "S" body shells were used as "S" police cars, so there`s even another twist into the tale :-)

hope you enjoy your "S", whether it is police or not, really hope it is tho, cause then people will look on it as even more impressive.

My Cooper was supposed to be a police car and to be honest I don't think it's a big deal. All that said to me was, the car was flogged during an early period of it's life and it did a heap of miles. It does tell me it is more likely to be a genuine car but, I don't think it adds value.

I don't think my Mk1 Cooper S was a Police car, it has a few holes drilled in certain spots that makes me think it was a series production race car!

I did have an ex-police K 8)

NSW Police cars also had two holes drilled in the welding seam cover on the "A" pillaron each sidenear the top of the windscreen where the alloy mesh sunvisors were fitted to them

Not all police Cooper S' had the sunvisors.

Can anyone confirm that aside the screw holes, etc, that one other mod on these police minis was lowered seats? I thought I once heard that mods were made to accomodate typically taller than average occupants, T/F?

My genuine ex police "s" when I bought it in 70 or 71 didn't have lowered seats but I have heard many stories in the years since that big people fit quite comfortably.

My mini did, however, have fully adjustable suspension, suspicous holes on the floor front and rear and full harness seat belts.

Lance Ruting, in the pits at the 72 Bathurst, came up to me and said he recognised the car and asked did i want to buy photos of the car.

I think there might have been an owner between the police and me
