Took off the dash today to have a look at the dash lights and speedo and when I unscewed my speedo cable to have a better look the wire on the plastic bit inside just came out (??).

Image

The plastic can go back in and sit there, but I'm guessing if the wires snapped off it's not connecting properly?

Image

Has my cable gone or is this normal?

When in, I get no resistance when I spin it. The actual thin wire is cut from the outer and can be pulled out seperately from the outer.

I'm guessing i'm up for a new cable?

yeah thats normal the big problem is that if you have to replace the inner the bit at the box will have to be removed it is a cheesecaked job to do

Any way of knowing if I'll need to remove the inner bit at the box? I was under the impression the cable was just screw in/out at both ends or is there more then meets the eye at the box end?

I have replaced both our minis with new speedo cables and I have to tell you that it is a fun job ............. NOT!!!!!!!!!!! there are a few ways of doing it ....... I take it this is on the moke?????

If so it isn't as hard as on a mini I belive because you can take the bonnet up higher but the real problem is getting your hand down the back. If you have got a passenger side engine steady then I found it was easier to get the speedo cable in and out but if you are looking at the drive in the box then best bet is to remove the radiator..........Also a fun job....... when the radiator is removed you can get to the drive easily first you have to undo the screw going into the box holding the drive in there (It is a 7/16th you can get to it with an extension) undow that then screw the end of the speedo back on a bit then pull the drive out and when it is out check that the gear is still attached the main thing that happens to these is that the gear comes unattached from the drive so you can fix it by pinning it with a 1/16th drill bit and pin. and then it is all good so the rest is preety self explainetory.

Oh just my 200cents worth and sorry for the long winded answer......

Pat

It doesnt need a new cable. You just have to push the middle cable back in, twisting gently until it slides into the spindle thing at the gearbox end. The middle wire looks like it has just pulled out when you have disconnected it. The cable was brand new a couple of months ago.You can feel when it has pushed in, as you cannot turn it freely anymore.

Will try pushing.

I noticed the speedo sticks from about 50miles+ and because I was doing 60 (90km) home and it stuck there, I'm hoping it didn't snap the drive train. I did a search on speedos and found the smiths pdf in another thread and it had a section on sticking speedos and said it might snap it :(.

edit: Still no go, I've taken a better picture of the snapped cable, as far as I can tell it's got nothing to catch on to so no amount of spinning is going to make it catch again... if it wasn't snapped I could make it re-thread on the gearbox end but it's actually snapped speedo end from what I can tell.

Turn the wheels hard to the right and look in behind the wheel you will be able to see the cable where it connects to the gearbox. Take a very long screw driver and place it through the hole in the inner guard and rest it on the edge of the teeth in the end of the cable that screws onto the speedo drive at the gear box and give it a gentle tap. Should be able to ghange cable in 5 minutes piss easy.

Just got back from link to organise my dash lights next week, they said judging by the outer shaft that the cable was resting at an odd angle and that's why it's cut. The speedo sticking randomly probably didin't help either.

Makka, I tried pulling it out, it seems stuck at a fixed length, i'd have to cut the outer to get any thread again... seems easier to buy a new cable .

yup get a new one then
some times if you can get the inner out you just replace the inner
when you do replace it give the cable a thin smear of grease but not all the way to the top
