Qick question,

If I want to lean my mixture on SU, looking from above with carby on car, I turn the big nut at the bottom of the jet anti-clockwise - yes?

so when its leaner, its more economical???

and clockwise slightly should be a lil richer, and thus more performance??

my recent observations from playing with mixtures indicated that a too lean mixture will give you no power down low....to the point where you can hardly take off without riding the clutch a lot. A mixture that is too rich will feel powerfull, but possibly foul your plugs, cause excessive fuel comsumption and/or saturate your bores with petrol and cause premature wear.

Finding the right mixture is quite important!

Reason I ask is, I've put on my 1.75" SU which was tuned on 1275, on my 998. 50k's on the hwy the other day chewed half a tank, so I'll lean it out a bit I think....

:shock: 1.75" is too big for a 998
1.5" is as big as you want to go IMHO

ive got 1.5 SU and 998 engine.

free flow air. extractors.

what needle would do nicely for me??

i think the winSU told me to use a AAA.

but is that something i can just go to mini craft and get. or do ausies use different codes?

Yes I know 1.75 is too big, but I wanted to fit extractors to free the exhaust up a bit, and this carb was already bolted up nicely to an alloy manifold and has been rebuilt. No idea what needle it has, my mech tuned it with a file!!! Which is why I'm just going to experiment a bit with main mixture. Not worried about low speed torque (which is what theoretically suffers - not that I've noticed) as you have to rev its tits off to go anywhere anyway....

K-Bar, i would be looking at an ABD needle for the 998 like yours. Mine is similar - exhaust, LCB, alloy inlet manifold and K&N and i have made up an ABD needle for it (which i had to slightly tweek to richen it in certain points). ABD is a good starting point though
