Screw on caps don't leak. Vans don't leak, tanks are more like a regular fuel tank. You need a van Anton!

Cheers

I can't speak for other oil companies, since I work for BP. But Ultimate is only made in Kwinana WA. It is trucked from the refinery directly to the BP terminals around the country. 98 octane Ultimate is not sold to the other oil companies. But they have their own similar fuels of course.

But Caltex, BP, Shell do share production of raw 92 and 96 in each state. eg: BP buys it from the Shell or Mobil refineries in Victoria and puts in their own additives at terminal level. In return, Mobil and Shell but the raw fuel off BP in WA and add their own additives at the terminals.

Because of the recent issues at Kwinana, supply of Ultmate has been drying up. Production is now in full swing again, but it wil take a few days or a week for Aus-wide supply to come back to normal.

Yep-That's the reason why..The"cracker" broke down at Kwinana. Then there was picket line at the gate to BP,so subbies could not get pass the main gate to carry out repairs.
But-BP could of ordered a Ship Tanker from Singapore, because they new 4 weeks ago that this was going to be a problem, and the tanker would of got here in time to "top-up" there critical low supply-so that's what they think about all of us that use 98'.....
Nothing

From what I understand it's not that simple.

BP cannot make the fuel anywhere else but Kwinana currently. For some reason it has to be cracked at Kwinana, so unfortunately they can't just import fuel and chuck additives in.
No cracker = No Ultimate.

Note that my work in IT, not refining. This is just my understanding of the situation and may not be entirely accurate.

Its a post ditilation process which revolutionised the petroleum industry when it was invented (1930s I think). When crude is distiled it produces different substances (petrol, kerosene, engine type oil etc) this destilation process is very similar to distilation to extract alcohol. The problem is that petrol is only a minority part of the distilation process so you are left over with a whole heap of substances and some petrol when you want majority petrol and some other fuels and oils.

Cracking allows to convert those other substances into petrol by breaking the mollecular chains of the fuels with the bigger, heavier molecules into the smaler petrol molecules. So you get much more control over what is extracted from the crude oil base.

Yeah that's what BP's NZ site said too, last time I looked. Theirs comes from there too.
But my mind boggles at the idea of fleets of ships & tankers distributing it all from Kwinana- it is (usually) so widely available here in NSW now that the supply chain surely is shorter.

Gday Dylan - get one of those Jap 7.5 gallon tanks - they come with the unleaded insert to stop people trying to cram the leaded (when they were around!!)hose into a unleaded car. The little flap stops the fuel coming out and on the paint...
