Fuzzy,

I have thought about running it in the sills before, was not sure about the heat build up.

This would have worked a treat if positioning the turbo over the gearbox.

The only drama with side exit exhaust, is i think you have have the exhaust exit past the last opening window (ie back window on mini).

Run a side pipe exiting in front of the rear LH tyre
(must be at 45 degrees, & angled toward the road)
Screw the window shut

May be cut holes (as is done to save weight) in the undersides of the sills to let some of the heat escape.

This begs the question how much do the sills add to the structural strength :?:

If they were sliding windows and they slid from the front it would be OK ?

I think they are talking about the rear passenger windows.

I wouldn't think there would be any need to get cute with the exhaust. It will fit with the prop shaft down the tunnel.

So.....what have we concluded? The EP85 awd gearbox mates up to the 4EFTE (or infact uses the 4EFE motor). If it fits it can be made stronger. Now, what is this EP85 and what does it look like? Any around in Australia?

Trust me Stripe.. no room for tailshaft with a 3inch exhaust

Dean,

Dont get hung up on the 3" exhaust. Its easy to run exhaust next to the tunnel if we use 3"x 1" oval tubing. As a matter of fact, 1 down each side would breath just as good.

So what about this Tercel idea?? Jeremy - I do believe that a 4AGE/4AGZE mates up to a tercel box, even though the Tercel box is actually narrower (but deeper) than the standard 4AGE box. Is this correct?

Remember - we want AWD not 4WD. I belieive the 4AGZE does about 120KW standard and the 4AGE 20-valve 123KW. However, thay have been known to produce about 180-190KW in Formula Atlantic trim.

IMHO - The Tercel (Corolla II) box and drivetrain would be a much more robust option that the EP85 and mated up to a 20-valve 4AGE would give sterling performance.

Comments........

Andy

I havent been able to get an answer just yet, but i know there are some similarities between the 4e and 4a gearboxes.....and i'm pretty sure that the tercel used a 4a variant.....although it certainly wasnt a 4agze or a 20v.......just a low spec carb fed 1.6......with probably half the power of a gze....

there are guys that have fitted corolla 6 speed gearboxes to their 4efte's.....but i havent really looked into it or taken much notice because it's not in my list of things i'd like to do :)

I can do some research, give me a few days :) oh, and you may as well keep your eye out for cheap tercels.....but the track and wheelbase will be quite a bit larger i would imagine

Hi Jeremy,

Tercel engine carb fed 1.5 litre and very agricultural (71kw) - no real performance or tuning bonuses there. Remember they came out in 1984 originally and were in production until 1992 in Japan.

A mate I talked to said that4AGE/4AGZE onto Tercel box a long shot, and even if it did mate up then Tercel box may not handle double the power (???). Better off with 4EFTE

He also said that Tercel box into Mini would be a feat of engineering due to the way the gearbox is shaped - propshaft comes out in the middle of the cabin as the Tercel has a very high tunnel apparently to get it up off the ground (i.e. 4wd). So maybe we should be trying to track down EP85 as at least we know it will fit (kinda).

JC / Inazuma / Et al - FYI

So why are we AWDing in the first place. If its to get power down to the ground then you will need to have output like Deans to make it worthwhile. If its for show - maybe Civic AWD route or Suzuki Alto/Daihatsu ?? may be a better option.

Anyway - just my two cents. 8)

Regards,
Andrew

Hey everyone why don't we think outside the box (sorry  ). There are a few European AWD/4WD things and the most obvious to me is the Fiat Panda 4WD they are tiny, still look like a car and would almost drop straight into a Mini, saw tons of them in Italy last time I was there.

Hi Dean,

The Honda Civic shuttle would be the perfect donor vehicle to do a awd (not 4wd) conversion with. The engine is identical to the B16A, with DOHC and EFI, but without VTEC. In 1984, the original release shuttle came out with the 1.6L 12-valve engine straight out of the Civic 2-door, it was silky smooth and developed 85bhp.

In 1987 the car was released with full time AWD

By 88-91 the car had been upgraded inline with the rest of the Honda engine range and was fiited with the CRX motor. This 16-valve mill was a real gem from Honda and developed in the CRX 145bhp, in the shuttle this was benchmarked at 125bhp. With the VTEC head, which bolts straight on, the magical 1 bhp per cc is acheived, i.e 165 bhp with no other mods. Formula Atlantic trim will see them blow out to about 190kw.

The other donor vehicle worth mentioning would be the Toyota Corolla awd (AE95). This has similair specs to the Honda and ois a definite worth contender as the 4AGE bolts straight onto the gearbox. One os threse with a silver-top or black-top 20-valve would be an absolute rocket and if I had a preference, this is the route I would follow.

Hi Matt - the Fiat Panda came out in the very early eighties (82 I think) and was powered by a 965cc three cylinder engine producing about 47kw. By the later half of the eighties this was updated with the 999cc 'Fire' engine and EFI - which produced about 55kw. Top speed was blistering 83mph. The Panda was discontinued in 1992. There are no engine upgrades other than standard for the Panda so you are stuck with 55kw and 999cc. BTW - they are 4WD not AWD as they had front wheel drive most of the time until you engaged the Steyr-Punch developed 4WD system. They were utiliatrian at best and agricultural at worst. Not for me and I doubt if it would fit anyway as the Steyr-Punch dog-box for the RWD was hung off to the side a bit.

So the contenders as I see them are:
1. EP85 - easy fit, uses 4EFTE, but fragile transfer box. Could possible fail with more than about 150kw put through it. Unsure, but I think it has VLSD b/w front and rear. Unsure on torque split.

2. Civic Shuttle - Great engine, great box, easy fit. Would redily handle 200kw plus. Plenty getting around and big in Japan and UK. 57/43 torque split F/R with VLSD keeping it all under control.

3. Toyota Corolla AE95 AWD - good motor in standard 4AG, unknown how much bhp the AWD system can handle but if its Toyota its gotta be good, 55/45 torque split (??) and also VLSD. The standard 4ag can be replaced with the 20-valve giving 160 bhp plus while I have seen a dyno chart with a turboed 4AGE 20-valve head on a 7AFE block produce 350 bhp - interesting. Rarer than Civic shhuttle and possibly more $$$

4. Out of left field is the VW Golf Synchro - The G60 version of this was an absolute rocket and produced 160bhp+ from the 1.8 litre. VLSD on F/R split and 47/53 torque split. Handling for this vehicle was impeccable. I am unsure if they came to Australia or fven Asia/Pacific. Plenty in Europe. Now discontinued and repplaced by Golf RE82 (great car!)

Other than that - the floor is open to comments etc. Dont forget the Suzuki Cultis/Alto (rare as RHS and big $$$) and also the Daihatsu Scion/Sirion AWD (???)

Comments anybody........

With Love,
Andrew

I'm dropping my gear to my fabricator mate next week to get him making my new trailing arms.... using the whole rear subframe to keep it rigid and pick up standard mounting points - and to give it a 'factory' kind of look, sticking with the rubber cones cos the back of the van won't handle coilovers without a LOT of bracing

Image

1989 Civic 1.5 16v SOHC AWD, standard with twin SU copies, but I could bolt on injection from a Concerto, I'm using 2 downdraft webers tho, till it's on the road and sorted, cos I really want to turbo it... it's gonna be luverly to drive....
