My car stopped running the other day, it sounded a bit like your problem with it dying and I changed back and it kept dying. It was the float needle in the carby stuck closed!

The fuel pump has two valves in it and they can get little bits of crap in them so that they won't seal. Sometimes you can blow through the pump and clear the valves.

Re the rubber seal on the oil filter (early type)- there are 2 different diameters used, make sure it's the right one!
`Right one' is the same diameter as the canister you have. The later ones with the filter bypass switch on the housing have the bigger diameter one.

Best bet- chuck it all, get a spin-on filter setup off a dead Clubby.

Yes, but you need the filter housing off a Clubby to screw it onto.

well today i have been fiddling around with the van trying to get it started but to no avail

i have narrowed the problem down to fuel pump- i put a jar of fuel with the fuel dipped into the jar and it still wasnt pumping.

i think the cork seal/gasket in the fuel pump is so far gone (oval shaped) that the filter is now sucking in air- i took out the little filter mesh thing and hooked up the air compressor to the feeder pipe and blasted it- nothing was blown out of the pump.

after i replace the cork sealer i will see how i go- any ideas?

cheers

a new gasket set is $50- seems a little steep to me :?
how much should one expect to pay for a reconditioned (new gasket set and filter) fuel pump- i was quoted $80?

cheers

Why wont you get an electric fuel pump - should cost you no more than a new mech one.
Your options are an SU points unit such as fitted to the Cooper S (between $80 and $140 depending on the brand) or the supposedly more reliable solid state unit (Facet available from Repco or Supercheap for approx $60 ? ). You will then also need a blanking plate instead of the mech pump (I think you can just leave it there unhooked) and some fuel hose to make up the connections for the elec. pump (which goes on the rear subframe under the fuel tank).

Or you could try the wreckers for a pump from a small car.
