Have just pulled the head of my sons Clubman as it has a blown gasket and the head is a 12g 202 but has double valve springs and the cotters are held on with clips.
Could this head be off a 997?
Are there any other things to identify it or could the valve springs just be off a different type of head?
Just curious as i might keep these springs for my 1275 if they fit.

Sprite Mk2 (early 1098)
Mini K
Clubman 1100.

No - its not a cooper head
There is some confusion between head types here and in pomgolia. The coopers (and sprites etc) came out with a 12G206 which had larger valves and HUGE ports. As a result it was heavy on fuel (by pomgolian standards)although it went like sting and they introduced the 12G295 head which had smaller ports and therefore better fuel consumption.

Cynics also say that there was little performance difference between the 997/ 998 coopers fitted with the 12G206 head and the later 1275 cooper S. The 12G295 head made the later Cooper S seem significantly better.

The 12G202 head is a good solid head with lots of meat for high performance modfications. it also absorbs overheating fairly well as well and other everyday abuses.

I think (but am not sure) that small bore and large bore heads have different valve stem lengths. That means (if I am right) that the valve springs are not interchangable. ??????

Mike, if you measure the ports of a 206 and a 295 you will find the ONLY difference is the 295 has manifold location rings in the inlet ports.

The 295 were used on the Mk 2A Sprite, MG 1100, and 998 Cooper.
But the 997 Cooper manifold locates on the manifold studs.

I stand by what I said above- my mate had an original 997 Cooper way back then which had a 202 head on.

<edit> BTW Vizard agrees with me in his yellow book....

Lillee had a bog stock 12G202 with double valve springs... from memory after doing some research on factory fitted valve springs, i found that sprites came with double springs amongst other cars. Late clubman 1098 rod change cars also came with double valves springs and this is what Lillee's engine is, a late clubby 1098.

No bid deal, my GR 12G295 rips the 202 to pieces 8)
