And how long were you driving on it while it was running on 3 cyls?
hehehhe

i think it would ahve been 2 cyl's? it tried very hard to not run anymore for about 2kms (i was almost home) but when i stopped so did it and i could not get it to go again, about 2 kms from home :S walkable, but much easier to call dad for a tow home

I'd deck the head while off, to ensure it's flat. Check the block also.
when we had the head off it appeared that it had been recntly machined, i ahve driven it 10,000 kms since july, but it still had all the markings from machining all over it! also all the valves were sitting just a little up out of their seats, indicating that port work has recently been done.
but we checked both head and block anyway, both were dead flat. when we put the shiny new gasket on we thoroughly sprayed it with mylomar (before we put it on

:P:P) both sides and around every hole la bla bla. connected all thoe hoses up proper and set all the tappets to correct gap (0.012"). have driven it about 150 kms, need to check gaps and tighten down head!

Something's badly wrong there for a gasket to fail like that
how about timing seriously bad and lots of bad stuff that happened which made the timing very very bad
but now its good
