Not really, except it's far less messy to spin the late one off and turf it- than to take the canister one apart, clean it, fit the bits back in the right order, drop new filter in, change the O-ring in body, and whack it back on.

there is no performance difference but there is alot of difference in the replacing the oil filter cartridge.

the normal one has a bolt that goes up through the bowl and the filter cartridge which screws into the filter head. this is sealed by a small rubber seal which sits in a groove. the bowl has to sit up exactly with this. if it doesnt it spits oil out EVERYWHERE! the bolt which you tighten up on the bottom of the bowl is hard to get to as the subframe is in the way. it is tricky and very messy.

on the other hand, the screw on oil filter is the similar but instead of the bolt which holds the bowl of the filter to the head of it, the screw on set up has a filter cartridge which has a thread in the top of the cartridge which screws to the head of the filter. this is always leak free as you cant get the filter sitting off centre as the thread guides it. to get it off and on you just use you hands and turn it. then you just throw away the cartridge instead of having to clean the bowl and finding all the little bits and peices.

all depends on how patient you are really- to me this was money well spent.

cheers

quite often when people change the old style filter element, they stuff up the order of the internals, spring, plate, rubber washer etc etc & if it`s all fitted the wrong way then it`s easy to be NOT getting filtered oil back into your engine,,,dirty UN-Filtered oil is not really that good for crank bearings which is where it goes to first port of call

you sort of can`t really stuff up the late spin on type

I have seen a heap of cars with the cartridge type that didn't have a spring under the filter.

Also....
There are two different types of cartridge filters, there is the UK made one and the Australian made one. The Australian made one uses the Ryco R2200P filter.
Imported engines (850,Cooper,Cooper S) will not take a R2200P.

Old thread but....

has anyone noticed that it's now virtually impossible to get mini air filters off the shelf at Supercrap or Autobarn etc?
At least for standard 1 1/4 filters and oil filter cartidges.

gotta get me a spin on....
