What it means is the early A type gears as opposed to the later B type gears which are completely different from the really late A+ type gears. Pretty clear, eh? The A boxes had bronze cones for synchronizers and they were superceeded by baulk rings in about '62. This car should have a 3 synchro B type gearbox.
