Doc, an easy way to solve you rear seatbet dilemmer is to remove the rear seat
completely, build a big box, then you can store all the parts you need to keep that
A seriies runnig.
On second thoughts, the box probably would'nt be big enough.

Twin cam 16v alloy made in Japan is the way to GO.

If there is no seat, there is no need for belts

Reading this tread with interest as I am facing a related situation with my Moke.

Legally I can run lap belts only as this is what the car left the factory with. But to run in motorkhanas you need a lap-sash belt minimum (and a roll bar on a Moke), and I'd prefer a lap-sash belt for road use too.

My Moke now has a 2" thick roll bar made up to CAMS schedule J specs. However, if I drill holes in the roll bar and fit lap belts, then I need an engineer's approval, as I have "modified a set belt mount".

I can fit harnesses for motorsport use, but it seems it is illegal to use them on the road.

I wounder if they could ping me if wore the lap belt and the harness on the road. I'm still wearing the factory provided belt, and a properly fitted harness is always going to be safer than a lap belt. :?

I was with an engineer on Sunday when he was certifying a Lotus 7
The car had full harness belts
He checked the mounting points, & complyance with the Aus standard (this should
be on the belt) it was'nt, but on the sales brocure, which he had from Rocket Ind
stated the the belts complied with or exceeded AS000000, what ever it is
They are legal for road use in NSW according to the engineer, this will be in
the engineering report.

BTW drilling holes in roll bars to fit belt mounts is a no no

Yep, read the specs. All holes must have a welded sleeve for the bolt to prevent the tube from crushing.

Doing mine now - T6 Aluminium alloy

Q1: I know for a fact that in Victoria if your car didn't come with rear belts that you don't have to fit them and can still carry passengers. I have a 1959 Borgward Isabella Coupe with no rear belts and its totally legal. If you do fit belts though they MUST be worn at all times.

got pulled over about 2 years ago and the copper would not belive that the car never had seat belts so he rang he's sarg and he said to let us go corse u cant get prosicuted for no seat belts in back if the car never had them. though i thought u have to have them in the front even if the car dident orignally

No belt points in rear of this car (3/70), they became mandatory fitment in 1/71 I think.
I never (well, very seldom) carry anyone in the rear, it detracts from the power/weight ratio... :P

Me wondering about this....perfectly understand the need to prevent compromise of a cage.....but.....if done by a competant welder.....why can't you weld gussets/corner fillers to a bar that could accept a seat belt mount :?:

You could do that, so long as it complies with this:
http://www.dotars.gov.au/transreg/vsb/PDF/NCOP7%20Section%20LK%20Seating%20and%20Occy%20Protection%2028sept2005.pdf
Roll cages start on page 32 (the rest of it is seat & seat belt stuff)

Hi Kev, as every secong post has said - if you didn't have then originally (and they haven't been retrofitted) then you can't get in trouble for not wearing them.

Try fanging around NSW country roads in a 50s sports car with cut away doors. Its enough to make you a fervent believer in belts..

You obviously realise that the rear shelf in an early Mini (non Clubman probabaly) is not structural and should never be used as a belt mounting location - even with a siffener plate. Have a look at a Clubman rear shelf that was produced with rear belts and you will see that its double plated and has little box section reinforcing bars.

Any seat other than that fitted to that year and model by the manufacturer requires an engineer's certificate. Most harnesses, even if FIA approved, are not ADR compliant and hence are illegal unless certified by an appropriate engineer.

Cheers, Ian

My mini came with retractable lap type seat belts with the old style rag type one's up front. I wanna change them to retractable, how difficult would this be?
