My Mini K has a 998 clubbie motor and box. Is the Speedo likely to read accurately.
The car should be on the road ina couple of weeks so I thought I had better ask the question

Speedo is calibrated to diff ratio. I think Mini K had a different diff ratio to a clubby, so your speedo will read out.

i found out if my was correct by driving passed one of those camerras which flash on a screen how fast your going. it was dead on !

Any one have any idea which way the speedo will read, fast or slow?

Really find driving to MPH a bit difficult anyway.

So clubbie speedo head in a casing to make it look like a tacho and a clubbie speedo cable, mount it so it is in front of the driver. Will need some globes in case it gets dark wired to existing dash lights. Wonder if a clubbie speedo cable is long enough to mount the unit on the steering column. All sounds OK?

Your average rod change clubby 998 has a 3.44 diff. The Mini K has a 3.65 diff.

3.65 diff at 4000rpm in 4th gear with a 165/70 R10 tyre = 100.14km/h
3.44 diff at same revs, same gear, same tyre size = 106.25km/h

So your speedo will read 6% higher than actual road speed. But Mini speedos were never super accurate anyway.

Speedo will actually read slow, you will be going faster than it thinks by 6%, as you are putting taller diff in..
Might be almost accurate then!

It would look like a tacho and to be honest I don't think I will be putting a tacho in this car

Clubby speedo would look crap in a roundnose, IMO.

If you want it same size as K one, to read pretty right and in KMH too, look for a big wheel Moke one. You want the one that has `800' marked on the centre part to right of where it says `Smiths'.

`800' means 800 turns/Km, which calculates out pretty close to the 1280 turns/mile of a Cooper S one.

Whats the availability of one of those going to be like?

So this would go in place of the existing speedo still located in the middle of the car.
Do you actually get used to looking over there for the speedo

Yes it replaces existing one. We have a Moke one in Barney (wife's pretend S).
Yes, after 42 years of looking over there at one it's pretty good. Beats peering around the steering wheel at a Clubby one!
We're thinking about retrofitting a binnacle to the Clubby van...

Easy mental maths, Take the first number of the speed you should be doing eg. 60kph, will be 6, then multiply by 6 gives you 36MPH showing on your speedo, (well close enough anyway), so for 100kph will be 10 multiplied by 6 gives you 60MPH. Just need to know your 6 times tables.
