What is going on here the fan is so close to the Harmonic Balancer it touches when the motor is revved. Can't have the spacer behind the fan

Fans not on backwards is it?

Don't worry, the bits that touch the balancer will eventually get chewed off and then you'll have clearance Or you could use a sharp knife and make a neater job. Comes from using an old fan with bent and bendy blades...

No..that only happens when you leave a rag under the bonnet to soak up the water from the split in the radiator...Ask me how I know that a Mini will overheat when driven without fan blades...then again, don't.

Oh yeah, I remember my beast making a horrid noise once when I had last the rad cap and used a rag as a wick. Eventually it got eaten by the fan. No damage, but christ what a noise.

I also seem to remeber seeing a few difference spacer sizes?

measure between the radiator and the fan blades to see how much space you have and put some thick washers behind each nut to move the fan away or it will catch and you will end up with no blaeds left. ask MRBOB waht it does when it goes.

Yep....there is a bunch of room in front of the fan....the four bolts should have a spacer between them and the boss, thats what is being checked now....some discussion about different spacer widths above..also, but 5-10mm is all that would needed.

The fan has been in place for about 3 years and has "only just started making the noise".

Check the end float on the crank. (just in case )

Mick - I have some sparebie spacers here if you need them. I think at the end of the day just get the fan away from the balancer.

the fan has got old anf the baldes have distorted so when you rev it up the blades flatten out and touch.
Yep put the small spacer on the pump and you will be A ok again for another few years.
remember to use longer bolts but not too long or you will hit the water pump causing more damage.

IF it happens to have a belt drive kit on the cam(?) these push the balancer forward by 3 mm or so. I had to put a 3mm alloy spacer between water pump hub and fan, and move alternator forward 3mm too.
No prob spacing the fan a bit, it's miles away from the radiator core.
