I like the idea of having no speedo.
So does anyone have a cheap but good tacho they want to sell me, or timthetool, it is his topic!

CAMEl

Tacho as in `tachometer'. It reads engine speed. Once you program your brain with MPH or KMH/1000 revs you can work out what apeed you're doing.

Alas, you will need the speedo to work for the annual rego inspection (if these exist down there in the `wild south'...)

Do you really have to get a car inspected annually, or is this a joke that i don't understand, becasue we do not have to get cars inspected?

And thanks for the tacho description, i was really stuck with it :?

Ah, but that's why you guys all get pulled over so often- it's the only way the fuzz can enforce roadworthiness!

yea could be the cable, could be a gear in the speedo head.

Also, there is a spring in the speedo head (not sure of the correct term, but it wraps around in a coil about 20 times). This cold be sticking. I know this because I stripped a speedo to every last screw and put it back together and this spring gave me grief. Similar symptoms.

Have fun!

Hmmmm, are you talking about the spring loaded, cam driven, pawl that advances the odometer for you as the speedo goes round and round????

Most common problem with these is that originally they start with a nice sharp edge to engage the odometer gear. Eventually the nice sharp edge becomes a nice rolled edge!! If you catch it early enough some very very careful filing can restore your edge and give you a few thousand clicks more service.

Remove the spring clip holding the pawl on and carefully slide out the cam drive - clean in white spirit or similar then apply a small amount of Molybdenum Disulphide grease to the annulus on the shaft (if too much oozes out when you replace it - you have too much - wipe away all excess grease). Similarly, jus a little on the main drive gear.

Cable advice as above.

Some people can be a little rough forcing the cable into the speedo head and this can lead to the drive gear and rotating magnet to foul the aluminium drag cup.

They aren't exactly a precision instrument but they do need care....

Mike,
Last time I got `pulled over' was in 1969, "touch wood"...

I was cruising the Fiat 124 Sport up the Pacific Hwy on the north coast at about 110MPH (180 clicks) and the fuzz chased me 20 miles in his poor little Cooper S.. he said he was doing 106mph (it was downhill). He was not amused...
Road was not speed zoned then, so he did me for `drive at speed dangerous'.
I got off eventually, after 2 court appearances. That charge was always hard for them to prove unless you ran off the road or hit something/someone.

So now, I try to keep a low profile. Don't draw attention, and you are halfway there.

I seem to notice that around here the cops are pretty linient with the mini, even at "random" breath checks they often waive me through.

With the "pulled by the fuzz" I was trying to repeat a joke that I heard from a transvestite stand-up comedian awhile ago "Girls did you ever get picked up by the fuzz? Very painfull isn't it?".

And a cooper S at 106 damn that wouldn't be easy to keep on the road- could you have escaped if you wanted to?

Heh.. no I was flat as a tack. I didn't know he was there, until I slowed down...

He chased me almost from Raymond Terrace to Buladelah- at Waterholes Gap he was 200yards behind- so he said, from there to Bulahdelah (downhill) I gained 1/2 a mile on him. As I said, he was "not happy, jan"

Hey kev I was always wondering, as someone who was there when you could buy a cooper S new how affordable were they by the then standards? I mean we all know how much they cost nominaly but for a bloke to buy one then (considering the fact that cars were in general less affordable right?) - was it like buying a charade, or like buying commodore or like buying a $45K MX5?

They were $2,280 in the mid to late 60's. My Fiat 124S cost me $3,648 in `69. A Holden Premier was around $3,000.

S price seems cheap, but a tradesman's wage back then was only $60 or $70/week.

Problem with the S was getting one, the production volume was low. Dealers didn't like selling them to kids. Too much power...! So they sold us a Mini Deluxe instead, for 1/2 the price.

btw i was doing 80 in a 60 zone i did not cop a fine
nice ocifer he was
