Folks the Speedster....




Ok there is a gorgeous blue one in the latest copy of "Mini Magazine" with behind the seat U roll bars - looks amazing ...... has anyone seen one in australia? are they hard to build? is it hard to get an engineers certificate? would the department of transport (especially QLD) have kittens over one? What do you think of them?

The Yellow one near Lismore (Zac's mini , in another thread here - for sale , custom mini , wade through all our crap and you'll find the pic's of it ....) is fully engineered and registered in NSW . It wasn't easy but Zac had regular trips with it to the engineer and consulted him as to what was required . Mind you , his has the scuttle extended , is supercharged and extremely tough . It may be easier depending on how wild you go but I don't know . All I know is it can be done , find a good local engineer and have a chat about what he'd like to see to approve it .

I like the lines of the silver one (which probably is a model), but think what you'd look like driving it. Noddy!

Engineering a real one wouldn't be too hard, as you can weld up the doors for strength. You'd want the roll over hoops, I'd have thought. The fly screens look neat, but not as practical as a proper screen.

Banham in the UK used to do kits for them that looked really nice, but their website is no longer active.

You may or may not know this....

Firstly, the yellow one is the blue one with stripes on it. It got resprayed yellow and mechanically changed after being driven and displayed for about a year.

Secondly, the yelow one, blue one with sripes, and the green one have all had their bodies lowered / sectioned by removing 2 or 3 inches from every vertical panel on the body (note how close the headlight is to the indicator lense!) Too low for a road car in my opinion - you'd be barely higher than the wheel nuts on a Mack truck.

The yellow one has a steel tube chassis from floor to window line, with lots of triangulation inbetween. It also has steel tube bracing running up from the handbrake location to the centre bar behind the headrests. Much stronger than the roadster designs I had been planning previously.
