I find that changing from 1st to 2nd (with a rod change box only) has a long 'throw'.

The speed and momentum I build up in 1st seems to be somewhat lost by the time I can engage 2nd and continue on my way. Cars seem to scream up close behind me, anticipating that I am driving a modern day, injected, smooth shifting gearbox car (or auto car)

Anyone else with a rod change box have this dilema?

I don't drive like a grandpa, but in saying that I do value my syncros and gearbox, and I don't throw it rapidly from one gear to another.....

I wouldn't say a "long throw" but that is because i'm used to it, I spose!

I've driven Rodney's car, and he has a short shift in it. Bit wierd at first, if you are used to a normal one, but once ya get down to the first corner, it's all good!

haha grandpa JAM

I must note that i wasn't rushing it into gear above, that's about the sweet spot for a quick gear change, i could do it really fast..but i value my synchros and 'box too

No one overtakes me though ..you need more revs in first!

I think it has to do with gear ratio more than the throw Anton. Mk2 Cooper S ratios are closer together in 1st 2nd and 3rd and allows you to "put em away" at the lights  as apposed to being caught up after 1st gear?? someone want to enlighten us on this?

I find my first gear is way too short. by the time the engine is screaming it's lungs out, you're only doing 20kms/h (or at least it seems that way!) To really get away i need to rely on 2nd...

or maybe its just the people driving around you
i find that when i drive my mini people around me seem to find it necessary to drive a lot harder and faster then they probably usually do to show their superiority over a crappy little mini

im sure im not the only one who finds this people in commodores etc steppng out to blast past then only slow down when they get a bit ahead
