Hey all, well I've managed to get hold of a running 1275 - COMPLETE . . .

Its making me wonder... really hard .....

I was planning a full rebuild of my 998 into an 1100 "stroker" and going a little scary on it.... but with the 1275 landing in the garage, I'm wondering if i shouldnt do that instead....

Cost / Benefit puts them both in a pretty similar place....

It will be a Low-Compression, High-Boost, Carburetted and Intercooled setup, running a DRMINI-ST head, my RE-13T cam, DRMINI-ST Pulsar Dizzy, BMC ST Timing set and a few other bits.....

Aiming for around 120@wheels ....

So, is a small-block rebuild comparable in price to a big Block ? - In terms of Bearings, Pistons, etc ?

So, Big Block Thumper, or Small Block Screamer ?

Hmmmmm
J

It depends on what you're looking for , you can get equivalent power of a full house (and unpredictable for daily driving) 998 from a more reliably (less) worked 1275 having less strain on things . Also , since you have the 1275 already you don't have the extra outlay of sourcing the motor . Is this to be a daily driver or a weekend thrasher ? I'd do a little less to the 1275 than you were planning to do the 998 and have a more reliable engine still with good power .

At the moment, as a second car for when its raining and the bike aint an option (like this week in Sydney!)
and for weekend Cruising and Dyno Thrashing ......

So It sounds like the BigBlock would be the go ...

Having lived with a highly-stressed 998 for over 4 years I'm beginning to appreciate the benefits of a less-stressed engine....

The hard part will be getting the compression down enough.....

I have wondered how good it would be with a de stroked 1275 :?:

The yellow bible suggests the peak breathing efficientcy for the 12G940 etc head is below the 1275 capacity it currently has somewhere in the 950cc from memory :?

Would you have problems with turboing a 1100 because of the higher compression ratio?
Either way destroked or not etc the 1275 block would offer more potential IMO so that would be the way I'd go

I'm almost with you on that Ben, and selling the biggie would certainly go a long way to paying for the smallie .....

so I'm still 50/50 .....

Hmmmmmm

So it's basically

fun , unique power from 998 , unpredictability / reliability , following trends , bigger power .

Depends on whether you want to have something you need to keep fiddling with to keep the nig power coming from a slightly more fragile setup or reliable power from a less fragile setup . Or of course the 3rd option of going all out on the 1275 and making it as scary as the 998 for really serious power .

I still say go the slightly less tuned 1275 for reliability ......

I had the same problem, and decided on the small bore. Why? cos you can make enough power from a well boosted small bore to break things and a 1275 would not be much faster in real world situations. Traction issues....
I think 150+hp is possible to achieve if you put in as much work as people do with 1275turbos. And im sure thats enough power for anyone in a mini.

besides, i like the idea on shitting on all sorts of cars (including 1275's) with a measly 1000cc

i dont really think it would be much more reliable, the small block turbo could be made nearly as reliable and would be cheaper. ( can sell the 1275) Also the gearbox and other things can become expensive with big torque, continue with the small block you know you want to :)

A small block turbo wouldn't have overheating and fuel consumption issues that a turbo 1275 would. Also, if a 1275 gearbox is used it should last considerably longer.

I say big block - my small block was good but it certainly fell away on hills etc. The big block just has sooooooo much torque by comparison and then when you tread on the pedal it goes whoosh without being a screamer.

In terms of the original question - what is the cost differences - once you have all the essential gear, double row timing chain etc - the actual reconditioning costs are going to be very similar for either engine at the end of the day.

Sooo you'd preferr less horsepower for less time for more money - sounds like a sensible option.
