Ok, Odd question time.....

If i have S Rods, do I need S Pistons ? - or are they virtually the same as the 1300 ones ?

Now, what about if the Rods come from an 1100S engine, is that any difference ?

And thirdly, In the Karcraft Cattledog, they have prices for Pistons and Piston Ring Sets.... I'm guessing the price is per Piston.. not set .... yes ? So budget around $500 for pistons ?

Later

S rods = 521 yeah... I am no pro at this.. haha 1100S rods are just more chunky.. heaver..

Pistons.. are the same.. $500 for pistons.. unless your going TOP turbo pistons the thats to much..

I got my new Hepatecs WITH rings just over $200 from minisport.

aslo got 1330s for Chong last week. just under $200

Hmm, the last 1100S I pulled down had 521's in it .....I thought they all did...

The the listed piston price would be a Set then ? Ok, thats Much more sane....

Thanks Cody...

1100S rods should have large journals right :?: and there was probably some hardening / strengthening treatment the Cooper S rods got.

Cody is right S rods are 521 and other 1275-1300 rods are similare in looks but not as tuff, my omega +20 turbo big dish pistons were a grand, all depends on the boost level you want to run.

all 1275-1300 pistons are the same i believe

Dunno exactly which rods it has in it.... it doesnt arrive until next saturday !
Just getting prepared...

The last one i pulled down definitely had 521's in it....

so I'm guessing that most of them had them..... didnt they ?
otherwise, whats the difference between a 1275/1300 and an 1100S engine ?

if it helps, it 12y|Ta|h **** so definitley 1100S ....

:?
The first 1100S (1275) engines with a 12G engine prefix are supposed to have had Cooper 'S' rods but they did NOT have Cooper 'S' cranks. They used the small journal big end (1 5/8") and 2" main journal crank but it wasn't made of EN40B. There are several different part nos for these cranks each requiring different heat treatments after regrinding.
Preumably it either wasn't very successful or was too expensive and the 12G1505A large journal crank was created.
Later Cooper 'S' cars (OZ MK2 cars) used this basic casting but it was machined to Cooper 'S' dimensions (centre main bearing width is different to non S 1275 motors) and then hardened using the Tuftriding process. The MK2 S motor I have uses this crank. It uses the same part No as the EN40B crank, AEG480, but is made of different material. I have been told it is made from EN16T but not sure.
Little end diameter is the same for all 1275 rods at 0.8123" dia.
All 1275 Pistons use the same size gudgeon pin but the pistons themselves come in many different compression ratios and materials etc.

Hope this helps
RonR

Last 12Y/Ta/H I pulled down (Cody's) has S rods in. Crank is HARD, too, according to Spiro the crank grinder, and he should know.:)
p/no on crank indicates it's a small J non-S, but yes it is factory crossdrilled.

"Thats what SHE said" ......

Anyway, back on topic.... just floating some ideas here....

The better option would be ....

998/1100 Rods with ARP Bolts
998/1100 Rods with Grade-8 Socket-Head Capscrews
Modified "S" Rods and "Miglia" style pistons (press-fit rather than full-floating)

Can "S" Rods be used with 998/1100 pistons WITHOUT the press-fit gudgeon ?

Hmmmm.... its gotta be able to handle some big mumbo and maybe some decent revs.... 7000.ish....

J
