this is such an open ended question.

You can have a nice tight 1098 as opposed to a tired and worn out 1098. You can have a nicely worked 1098 or a stock as a rock 1098.

You can have a 1098 with a well tuned carb, you can have a 1098 with an oversized or undersized carb....geez the list goes on, and every different scenario will give a driver a different opinion!

So there! :P

A mate of une has a breathed over 1098 bored 60 thou with the head well ported and a mild street cam and he has no worries keeping up to a 1275 in a cooper s (don't know if that one is stock but) and it only looses out above 100mp/h round the corners there is nothing between them and the 1098 is dry suspension and the cooper is hyrdo and both are running yokohama A008's

Having owned a few of both (modified, stock and knackered) I'd take an 1100 over a 998 any day Much more driveable with the extra torque. I've never had an 1100 break on me, they just get smoky and the oil pressure drops off a bit.

My van has a 1098 + 40 thou, 12G295 head, Wade 104 cam, Pulsar D4R85 Dizzy, 1.5"SU, LCB and 1.75" exhaust. I have no problem keeping up with stockish 1275's. Just spent last weekend slotting in a reco gearbox with 3.44 diff.
Looking forward to fitting twin SU's with appropriate needles and putting it on a dyno. 8)

Main reasons I stuck with the 1100 instead of upgrading to 1275 were:
- no need for disks to keep it legal.
- less people in the 1100 class of the Hay Motorkhana and Hay's Heroes!

Cheers.

okay so after some time, and after owning/driving a couple of non stock 1100's i can say i like em.. but not the stock ones, they won't rev!

i'd say as a minimum, a ported head with bigger valves, xtractors + zaust and a 1+1/2" carb plus full engine balancing and they'll be smooth and beefy as.

i drove a stock 1275 and it was beautiful!
and my gf's 1310cc mini goes very well indeed, and munches hills for lunch but its not as smooth as my hottie 1132cc

I like the way you remember this thread from over a year ago!

I like the torque of my 1098 8) BUT......since driving my kharna car (stock 998) I can appreciate what you were saying about the smoothness of a 998.
