was looking to do the conversion shock setup...

i gotta clubman and was wandering what the difference would be and which one is better?

the term `gas shock' is a bit misleading.
All shocks have liquid in them, it's called oil... :wink:

`Gas' ones are then charged with nitrogen, ordinary ones have air in there instead.
Nitrogen is `supposed' to be better.

Hey Kev, not ALL shocks have liquid in em.....

Was talking to a few of the Hong Kong boys i know - they all showed me how they drill a hole in their shocks, remove the fluid, then fill it with silicon and plug the hole back up....

I have no idea what this would do to the car's handling other than make it really hard, and possibly stop the shock from extending....(maybe they did this to stop the springs from popping out???)

so really, gas and oil is no real big difference in handling?

anyone had the both setups before? notice any difference?

I've had Konis (oil) and deCarbon (gas) on a Fiat- and I'll take the Konis, thanks.. :wink:

Last time I looked all F1 cars used them too...

think it would be cheaper to get them direct from.....i cant remember.... :oops:

its a place in melbourne....or was it in perth? proly melbourne, nothing much happens in perth.

cheapest quote i got was $1160 for all 4 adjustables here in Sydney for my integra and got them shipped all up for $800-$820....

advantage of nitrogen is its qualities. it reduces the foaming of the oil during rapid shock movement, and also reduces the problems of internal corrosion. It is also more stable with differing altitude which is why it's used for aircraft tyres(doesnt mean much to cars though). Pure nitrogen will not allow combustion to occur within its atmosphere.

Most tyre places will even charge your car tyres with nitrogen if ya ask, think it costs like 25 bucks. Ya can tell which cars have it, by the red valve caps.

also oil heats up quicker than gas so when the oil gets hot it dont dampen as well

Heh Makka, there oil in both types! Unless it leaks out, then you got NO damping.. :shock:

Even so-called `gas' (nitrogen charged) ones have oil in them... :wink:

I'd say generally `gas' shocks are better made, but there are exceptions.

Yeah if it's liquid... in a shock it's not so it doesn't.
It is used in shocks because it doesn't expand and contract with temperature, as much as air does. So the pressure on the oil varies less.
