Anton
yeh mum labelled the can, i fixed it up: DUC MINI HYDRO FLUID
next time i reckon ive got the inclination to take a wiff and a sip before pouring anything into anything

i soaked up all the frothy stuff from the float chamber (dam lucky the fluid couldnt be sucked up into the carby through to the engine)
and held a container under the incoming hose to catch all the fluid while running the engine with good petrol in the float chamber

if you copy n paste some of these links
you might find some pics of a mc hydro pump
made by John Goudie

and i drove the moke around tonight, canley vale, cabramatta being next door
but i got home fine

sorry, I can't see the pics - it just says 'image hosted by angelfire' they must have something tricky to stop direct image links - would hate for people to use their service without being bombarded by advertising.....

Wow, that looks great compared to mine!

My pump is made out of a Morris 1100 pedal box and uses the pedal and master cylinder. I got a high pressure hose from the railway.
The mini tin tank is a bit small and you need to top it up every couple of pumps.

Dr, does yours have a non return valve or do you rely on the schrader valve as the non return?

I use the Schrader valve as non- return. I bleed the hose thru before I screw it on.
Fitting is even more agricultural than the setup- I took a brass valve cap, drilled it thru, turned the OD parallel in the lathe, then soft-soldered it into a brass fitting. Seal is the rubber ring from said valve cap.
Hoses are a pair of Mini ones joined with a bit of brake line- to turn the outer hose and fitting, I loosen the flare nut on the pipe in the middle, screw it on the schrader valve then tighten the flare nut. Bit messy but it works OK.

That is the same way mine is set up! I used a valve extension (used on the inside wheel of trucks) and we silver soldered a fitting onto it.
I did make a non return valve out of a morris rear brake pressure limiting valve when I first set it up but I deleted it when I made the good hose.

now forgive a dumb question - what is a schraeder valve ? I've heard of them, but have no idea what it is or does

A Schraeder valve is a normal tyre valve...
They were also used on hydros to hold the fluid in.

Makka, U need something better than a foot pump's `air chuck' to connect- the fluid is around 300psi...

Re: the hydro depressurisation scenario - the BMC handbook says you can still drive the car at speeds of up to 30mph on a completely depressurised system... Id like to be driving that car... The next sentence advises the unlucky driver to proceed immediately to the nearest BMC dealer...

Ha.. ill just drop into Heads BMC Carnegie then hey..

Why would you want a thicker fluid? Mine feels too stiff as it is - maybe becuase its a fairly recent repump.. I only ask because my mate has a Morry 1100S which floats on fluid - and i mean floats - its a really nice ride.. OK, my K handles better.. but I love the ride on that car. Im guessing the longer wheelbase may contribute to that??

Comments anyone?

yes I've driven mine flat `to the nearest dealer..' when I got there he charged me heaps for 10 minutes work!
So, I went home and built my hydro pump...

I hate to admit it- but hydro was a much nicer ride on the longer wheelbase M1100 and A1800, than in the Mini..!

Only point in stiffening the ride a lot is competition. I believe `some' works cars had restrictor valves in the lines for this purpose.

On a few G13B Suzuki GTI conversions I've seen, they separated the displacers F/R and ran 4 separate circuits. I would think this would stiffen the ride a lot- any SuziMini owners like to comment??
