And I don't mean it's a MK1 850 so it must be between blah and blah.

is there a reference that you can use the chassis number to get a better guage at it....

it's supposed to be a '64

however...

i've got miniworld's KYMA 5 and it says things like the chrome window catches (as i have) went fan-plastic in '63.

makes little difference, I mean, a mini's a mini , right (unless it's BMW of course ;) or worse....

a clubman  (settle) ;)

hmm.... wonders whether to take out the clubman thing so people don't miss the point of the post.... :?

nah...

Its a black art Cush, there are several books around like Mini downunder which can help, the date on your Wiper Motor if its original, round nose or clubby and sliding or wind-up windows etc There are sites that list sequential body numbers etc and they have such records in UK (Gaydon? Heritage..)

Good Luck

If it's OZ sold new the earliest it can be is a 1961. 8)

There is/was a restored early 1960 car in Geelong that originally turned up in WA. It was one of the UK build evaluation cars brought in by BMC before the public release. It has a lot of subtle differences eg:
- rear radius arms are a different casting.
- wheel centres are held to the rim with rivets!
- no recess in the body for the front screen rubber.

northern mini parts in melbourne (03) 9458 2111 have some records, and Ive got a mate who has some too - they say they can tell the year of a car by the body number. Give them a call, if no luck post the number and I'll see what I can find out

The wiper motor, the starter motor and the fuse carrier all have dates on them - AND so does the boot lock, it's on the upper face where the locking tab thingy pokes out - may need a clean up to get it, but I reckon the combination of wiper motor, fuse carrier and boot lock are the best physical ways to tell. If they are all close, you're on a winner, starter motors are changed too often to be of any use.

I think that's how it works, number by model. My MiniMatic was # 1385 and it's March 1970. Guess not many of those were made...

My 850 is definitely a 1964, and is car # 57857, if that helps..

My `64 has the later type stuck-in roof lining. Earlier cars has the 2 piece slide-in effort.

Couple of pics of it in Mini Gallery- `Mini on the spit' or something. Still not bloody well painted..

There really were very few changes during the 850 run. Baulk ring gearbox around `63 was the main `great leap forward' If the synchros work it's 63 or later!
