hey guys.

lately ive been fiddling with and tuning my lil 998.. think its been paying off..Had SO many comments from people..."geeeze that sounds nice now"
and crazy old men on the high way screaming out " hell yeah" when they finaly catch up at the lights.

How ever, when im doing a sharp left turn, the carb seems to lean out...

when the engines a tiny bit cold, it coffs and splutters on a left turn..

whats happening here?? anything i can do??

be cause the fuel bowl is to the left if you are turning hard the fuel is not getting to the needle and seat ...... fixes hif 38 or 44 or webber delorto .... hif series carbs have the fuel bowl under the carb instead of beside them webber and delorto the fuel bowl is on top

Could also be because an ignition lead is loose and gravity is pulling the lead away temporarily. Fuel starvation does happen but usually at higher Gs and sustained corners

Give the carby a good clean. Make sure not to touch the mixture settings or anything else, and leave the needle in, so that is in the same spot.

It might not do anything, but you'll end up with a clean carby.

contact points are looking a lil grey and pitted..might need replacing..

my other thoughts we..perhaps the SU piston is rising to quickly.. the spring might not be doing its job....cos i jump on the gas when im coming out of the corner...but thats too much fuel and not lean at all....same affect tho???

This happened to Ribena when I first became her owner - fixed with a carby rebuild and reset the float. No fuel was getting in when I turned left - as Makka sez, because the fuel bowl is to the left. You turn left and the petrol "swishes" away from where it's supposed to be. Reset the float.

But it only happens on left handers you were saying my guess if this were the case it would happen on both.

I think the fuel bowl and float is probably the most likely cause it is a well known problem with some SUs (it makes sense)

Tuning dash pot oil and springs may help performance overall but I would doubt it would solve the left hander issue... It is funny that we don't get this problem mentioned more though must be we just don't go round corners fast enough or maybe you get on the gas harder/earlier than most and get fuel starvation

Used to happen on my old n/a 998 .....

I took the float bowl cover off, and rotated it 120' ..... i'm pretty sure i set it so the float hinged in line with the axis of the car ... (Front to rear....)

No more "underfuelling" during corners for me !!

Can you do that? Um you would want to rotate it so that float hinged inline as you say but so that the hinge was towards the back right so that it didn't lean out under acceleration
