fuel gauge not working - any tips of where to start ?, using home made dip stick at the moment - not very 1977 !!

Check all your connections first including the ones for the tank sender unit.

where do the wires run from back to front of car - are they the ones underneathe the car ?

id start behind the dash then trace your connections, prolly just loose somewhere

Yep the wores run from the tankup the rear passenger side pillar with the rear lights wires along the roof, down the front window and into the dash
I would check that you have all clean connectionts and specialy the earth at the tank
