well i have just been cruising around the english forums and some of the coin those guys are spending on bike engined minis is amazing both in the usa and england

what do you guys think is it worth that sort of money are they really that good

i mean busa, r1s etc has anyone in australia done one i know they arent road legal here but just as a track car perhaps

I would love a 'busa turbo mini 8)
Was thinking about it this morning - got a shell sitting in the workshop, stripped, ready to go. Ultra light weight.

There is no reason why it could not be registered. It would be treated similarly to my Moke i.e. not a modification but Completely Built Up.
The only difficulty would be finding an engineer who would sign off on it, and passing emissions without the expense of a test.

Oh, and the time/money to do it :(

arent you an engineer you dont know anyone who would?

would be different but loud i think and interestin to drive to say the least

what about a suzuki GXR 1000 or an R1 maybe cheaper options

It would be easy to get it signed off if you used one of those Z-Cars kits

And if I was going to do it, I'd go all out on the big suzuki with a turbo.
Would not make that much difference in the overall cost of such a project.
Just need my six numbers to come up tomorrow night & I'll order the kit :D

My thoughts had been to do a twin engined , one in the front , one in the back , version , two 11/1200 cc multivalve engines , possibly turbo'd and the total weight a little over the standard mini ..... Could be a lot of fun but I really doubt it could be a road car , no reverse if you're using two bike engines ...

In the Z cars kits don't they engineer up a reverse gear for that reason (not having one on a bike engine) If that's so then if you didn't know what you were doing in the likes of that then you wouldn't have much chance on making it up... IMHO

In a couple of the british ones I've seen in articles they keep one driveshaft in the front subframe (bike motor mid mounted driving the rear wheels)and hook an electric motor up to it via a one way bearing . WHen the electric motor isn't turned on and working as a reverse , the bearing freewheels and doesn't engage . It seems to work but my idea wouldn't be possible as there would be a bike engine driving both sets of wheels , you'd have to have some other setup for reverse so I doubt it would be registerable . Not sure how you'd go registering something here with an electric motor running your reverse gear either .

Sorry people but the problem with bike engines is that they have never been required to meet emissions ADRs in Australia or overseas( so you can't even use overseas data to help), at the very least (and even in WA now) vehicles are required to meet ADR 39/01 which means the engine must come from an Australian delivered vehicle which meets that requirement and must run all the factory gear from donor vehicle or be tested to prove that it meets this standard either by having a IS240 test or a full test. 2 guys (Mackie Brothers) have built Hybussa powered Clubman sports cars in NSW and have got them registered but because of the bike engines had to have full emissions test carried out on them, cost about $7000 each car for the test which can only be carried out at a couple of places like Holden's engine plant or Ford, Toyota and Mitshubishi, I believe there is one lab that is private but not sure if it is in Vic or SA. Its not that they won't pass its just the cost of proving that they do and with mods like Z cars it becomes an ICV so is treated as a new car not a modified one

ahhh well i have zero out of the three so no chance of me having a bike powered mini in the garage for a little while :roll: sigh

use a flywheel ring gear on the side of the diff and then use a starter motor to give u a reverse gear, not ideall i know but its wot a lot of people (and thats wots used on the global lite race cars) also quaiffe make transfer boxes, (6 gears forward and back :D ).

Also i know that any of your big power mini suspensioned conversions would outrun even the best z car conversions. This is down to z cars grasstrack knowledge, they go well round a field, this is down to gtrailing arm suspension with no roll induced camber built, as the carrolls the tyres roll onto the sidewalls. not good for traction. it would be nice to see some one build a proper one with double wishbone suspension.

on a dvd over here they put some mini round a track, a twin engined r1 mini did a 52.something second lap, a mini vetec was less than a second slower but it had a metro k series sub frame and a 1380 a series with 120bhp was about 1.2 seconds slower than the r1(which had 320bhp). seems silly to spend so much time and effort.
also the 1380 had 13inch wheels and all the interior i think.

you will only need to abide by the ADR's set out at the time of construction for the FRAME you are using....

If you do anything as radical as a mid mounted bike engined mini
you will have a hard time getting them to consider it anything other than
a Completely Built Up vehicle under the new National Code of Practice
(as I found with my moke).

Then you have to comply with all the new stuff :roll:

yeh, but would it need to be mid mounted??? if it stayed in the engine bay, you would be ok
