i am posting constructively... that wasn't against you ....

so why are you putting a 4efte in a mini anyway? Why didn't you just buy a starlet and strip it out?

ok...sorry...i thought you were having a dig at me 8)

i am doing a conversion to a 4efte for 1) the challenge of making it work 2) the added reliability of a modern engine and 3) performance...and hopefully improving the mini beyond its original spec...

i considered buying a starlet...but its just an everyday normal car...sure its a hot hatch...but its not special...you see heaps of them around...you see nowhere near as many minis around...and you (at the moment in brisbane) see absolutely NO 4efte powered minis around...

Remember that the standard mini set-up is effectively double wishbone. It has a very good geometry that you would find difficult to beat. Only the track rod and lower arm mountings could be improved by using a more modern system of high logitudinal flexibility with low transverse flexibility. You may be able to get better bump-steer properties.

Standard mini set-up is a thousand times better than the current micro-car standard.

I reckon, if the engine fits with the standard setup, go with it.

For improved handling with wide wheels some people make longer lower arms, custom longer upper arm and longer driveshafts, then use the extra long tie rod ends and wheels with large offset. This enables the king-pin offset to be made small (< 15mm is good) and there is less wheel kick-back and torque steer while having wide track.

hmmm...interesting...i was planning on a wider track and the standard suspension setup will work with the 4efte...was just wondering if double wishbone was both possible and an improvement over the stock mini setup...before i had a think about this this morning i was gonna order a Heavy Duty Adjustable Lower Arms, heavy duty adjustable tie rods, polyurethane bushing kit from minimania overseas:

For years Honda only did wishbone set ups for FWD cars. Could copy, adapt one of these.
Skylines have wishbone front and have drive shafts. R32 has very short upper arm but R33 is longer = better.
Wreckers run I suggest.

sounds like the way to go...i would also have to use a modern wheel hub then i guess...not entirely bad :P

I imagine this will imping on the space for the engine which will already be at a premium :?

So it is the fact that the lower arms on the mini's front suspension is longer than the top than means that as the suspension travels you get changes in camber :?:

Yes

I suppose it's relevant in the sense that you'd be designing a new subframe for the engine swap AND for the suspension. The thing is that there is really no reason to go that far to change the suspension. The bolt on upgrades to the stock suspension will be more than enough to keep up with any power upgrade. Traction will be your biggest problem if you have that much power.

Another thing to note is that designing your own suspension will make it pretty much impossible to get registered.

hence why if i was going to do this i'd steal it from an existing vehicle :)

Taking components from another vehicle does make it easier as the powers that be like that better than fabricated components. The problem I can see is transferring the geometry of the donor setup. If you successfully transfer all the control arms etc over, that will be one thing, but will they be happy that things like track width, wheelbase, weight distribution etc etc etc are not the same on the new vehicle compared to the donor? That's one hell of an industrial size can 'o worms.
