hey all.
Would anyone know of an easy way to get the cage off the diff pot end of a driveshaft. Without removing the shaft all the way?
i.e. i have the shaft out the pot and i need to change the boot, But i think i need to knock the cv off the other end and slide the boot all the way along.
Any short cuts available?
thanks all

just changed both boots on my drive shaft last week,
you need to take the cv joint off to change either boot.
get someone to hold the cv joint straight and give the bell of the cv joint a good hit with a hammer.mine came off on the first hit.
regards felix

You will be amazed how much the small end of the boot will stretch. In the past I have just shoved them straight over the top of the inner shaft end. Just remove the balls and the slip the cage off. Remember to check which is teh inside and what is out. With the inner boot you put the cable tie on the inside of the boot and then fold teh boot back over it.

Mind you I wouldn't like to take the blame if the boot splits as a lot of Minibits seem not to be as good a quality as they used to be...

Cheers, Ian

I think ben is talking about the inner pot joint not the CV or outer joint.

It's realatively easy but you need to pop your ball joints off and the steering arm so you can access the whole thing and take it off. Get your car on jack stands and get underneath to cut the metal clip that is holding the old boot on and slip the entire hub/driveshaft and inner race will come straight out.

Get ready to catch the pot joint balls, don't loose them!

Once out, take off the inner clip that is around the driveshaft. To slip the new one on you have to disconnect the pot joint inner race from the driveshaft (hold it updright and whack it with a BFH), watch your toes.

Replace the boot, buy 2 new driveshaft circlips, tie the smaller end boot to the driveshaft, put in a new circlip, pop the (cleaned) pot joint race back on, crease it up with LM grease and put the balls back on the race. If you are good, you can make the balls stick to the race using grease alone. Then slip the whole driveshaft, hub and all into the (cleaned) pot, and pop the ball joints back into their slots. This is the tricky part, if you don't get it in line, a ball will fall out and you will have to start again (ie. Greasy work!). Once done get under the car and put new metal clips on the inner boot.

It's relatively simple if you know what you're doing. Consult the Leyland black book which shows you how to do boots and remove the pot joint race... Good luck!

Thta's exactly what I said ...but you don't need to hit anything with a hammer.. Leave the inner race of the pot joint in place just remove the balls and cage.

Cheers, Ian
