 Post subject: 850 Engine Numbers

Does anyone know what an S stands for after the engine number on an 850 block ?? It is the original motor in the car ...cheers

Does the engine # start with "8AM"?

Mine doesn't have an S anywhere in the number , are you sure it's an S and not a bad imprint of a 5 ? Mine is 8AMUH/ then the 6 digit engine number with nothing after it . Mine ends in a 5 though and is a little difficult to read , it's written in the handbook as a 5 though .

It has the 8AMUH and six digit engine number which matches the id plate , then a space and an S ??

I reckon somebody has added that S. Only numbers that end with letter are POLICE supplied ones (when U buy bare block no ## on).
They all end in `P' as in my 1st one- N661771P. 8)

On other BMC and Leyland blocks that I cam across with a letter "S" at the end of engine number, it always meant that the Block is sleeved from factory. Most times this was done due to Poor cast iron which tested to be too pourous. Ok Masta ?

Ahh ....thanks Convertible Mini , mystery solved . Will be taking the head off shortly to repair a burnt valve so will check it out ..thx again ..cheers Alan
