I've got a shell with no headlining - I'm wondering if it serves any purpose other than asthetics? Might stop some noise/reverberation maybe? Anyone running without one that can comment?

it might soften the blow to the head going over bumps...

i drove around without a head liner for a few months and then i installed one and the difference of the driving noise in the cabin was incredible, soooooooo much quieter!!!

Yep thought that might be the case - kinda like the difference in the sound of a room with and without curtains/furniture I guess.

It's kind of a luxury item that I enjoy. I like to keep weight down, but since these are so light you might as well have one. I drove around in a 1977 Toyota Corolla with a full cage and completely stripped of interior bits, including headliner and carpet. It was funny how it sound like you were in a tin can. But I had an uncorked 13B rotary in it and it was insanely loud inside, I have a feeling that a Mini would also be loud without a headliner. Just keep it.

Not a case of keeping it, it's a case of installing one! I'm putting an ex-race car back on the road and am also trying to keep weight down. I'm inclined to agree though that for the small amount of weight I may as well do it.

I have sat in a car with partial headlining and the noise and echo was unbearable...

What's between the actual liner and the tin usually - foam? Anything at all?

Once you get used to it, AND go deaf its actually quite pleasant !

Got no head-lining in the brick, just never got around to putting one in....

I quite like the absolutely raw feel it adds - no carpets, no hearlining, no sound-proofing at all .... you know when you are driving it !

You could get away, possibly, with fitting acoustic sound-deadening material instead of a headliner, but it wouldn't look very nice. There should be a couple of strips on the roof anyway. It basically adds a bit of mass to stop it reverberating. Another option would be to glue that material they cover subwoofers etc in - may be easier as headliners are fiddly to replace.

Or find the two piece headliner out of an 850 , they sit in with only a couple of screws holding them and don't have to go under your windscreen and side window rubbers . Just a bit easier to fit , providing you can find one .

The headliner also stops condensation from dripping from the roof on foggy days.

In willy's case, it stops you getting footprints on the roof.
