I had a gauge go driving this afternoon my oil and generater light when on I think is what their called? Is this common for original or near original cars? or is it purely the gauge shat itself???

confused thinking of seeing an auto electrician what sugestion or agreence in reply is helpful thnaks.

yeah well I did write that drunk.... but my fuel and temperature gauge went on me yesterday..... saw smoke come from behind that gauge (fuel/temp). now my oil light wont turn off or the other light so I have a red and orange one on all the time I have it in acc or driving. Is it common for gauges to make a puff of smoke then stop working. could the wiring itself cause this to of happened?


apart from this 1 gauge not working teh cars running looking like a dreram LS.

Aha - this is what i have always been told. All wires are actually hollow and full of smoke just waitng to get out. Once the wires rub against something and wear through the plastic coating and the smoke escapes they are no good.

This is exactly what has happened to your car - its had a dead short somewhere or the voltage stabiliser has let go. Take it to an auto electrician before you burn out the rest of your wiring loom and either the voltage regulator or the diode pack on the charging system.

thanks for your help although had I senced a touch of smartarse in your support and information it was most apriciated and helpful... by the way smartarse is the way to be it seems these days people need more laughter. anyways Im in Sydney so I think off to the auto electrician early next week not in syd til sunday night. probably going to Arkas in Artarmen. heard he's brilliant at what he does and knows minis.

Check yr fuses first - might save some time & $$.

the3 soliod behind the dash blew...... getting it repaired for now as it fried my circuit board too...... getting a quick fix for now but will replace the wiring and all the boards fuses etc.. when I save some moeny .... any idea how much it would cost me to replace all that? i.e. wires circuits boards fuses and everything i bneed to put brand spanking elecricals in my car??? or is that possible more to the point.

I have something similar with my fuel guage.
When I fill car up, guage works and shows full. As I drive the guage goes down, so much so that it reads empty after ~30 minutes. So I pull over to fill up and it takes 5 litres(Obviously wasn't that full last time). Is the problem likely to be in the guage or in the tank?

Maybe a hole in the float for the sender unit in your tank As you are on empty the fuel drains out of the float but once full it leaks back in and makes the guage go down

Just guessing. I think there is a way to diagnose if it is the sender or the guage can't remember though.. I know how to test the temperature guage but the fuel guage has not stuffed up yet

I've taken a multimeter reading on the back of the sender unit, but don't know how much resistance it should be for full and how much for empty. Does anyone know?

It says a bit further down that you can earth the sender wire out and it should read full on the guage this will tell you if it's your guage or the sender
