The steering rack is out of the car while i rebuild.
Yesterday the rack tipped on its side on the bench and a small amount of oil leaked out of the top where the steering column attaches.

Does this mean the top seal is stuffed or considering that this usually points up is it normal?

yeah, seal is stuffed or maybe popped out,,,shove a new one in there while you can

No offence intended here but--> anyone writing a book about minis 30 years ago may not have experienced such worn or stuffed-with components as we are finding these days.

You should put your heart & soul into everything you do.
