Weevel;
You forgot to mention that in NSW you will also need an engineer's ceritifcate to get registered - which adds another $300 provided all goes well. As with all dealings with government departments, nothing is easy and experience is a great teacher.

Good luck with it mate, hope to see you on the road soon.

Cheers,

personal imports don't need engineers certificates...
only 15 year old ones or RAWS compliance ones.

Meh, what would you know about importing vehicles?!?! Mate, have you ever imported a vehicle?!?! :P :wink: :lol:

Seriously, the NSW RTA states "If the vehicle has been modified to comply with regulation requirements (eg converted from left-hand to right-hand drive or the fitting of seatbelts and child restraints etc) a certificate from a qualified Engineering Signatory to certify that the vehicle meets Australian standards." - and I've been told that they only recognise engineers in NSW. I copied this from;

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/rego_new.html

That's a bit silly Speedy. :roll:

Different states have different rules! How many cars have you imported? Brickworx imports Minis all the time. I think he knows what the Sth Aus laws are better than you do!! :lol:

Based upon my experience, if you are looking at importing a car I would recommend to anybody to buy one off someone who is experienced in doing it or pay someone to help you bring it in unless you really enjoy stress and dealing with government red tape.

I have see a fraction of the paperwork Brickworx needed to get my car in country and getting it registered, and it is this experience that a novice like me is paying for. Money well spent in my opinion, as unless you know what you are doing you do run the risk of ending up with something that is unregisterable or spending $$$$ to get it to pass.

I too have seen the work required, as I used to work with Henry Draper who imported lots of UK and Japanese minis.

I totally agree with you on the subject of paying someone else to get them in and complied.

Well i think it is all looking a bit hard. I actually started looking into brining it into canada where i am now, so that my passport would match up as the "primary country of residence", as in my experience with visas/ residency in different country, most countries require (including australia) that you stay in your primary country of residence for 6 months and 1 day to qualify for resident status. so i presume that is what the aussies would be looking for...evidence of over 6 months in england, with exceptions provided if you can prove you were away on business (letters from employers).
In the end the hassle of two lots of shipping, insurance, duties etc, was getting to be a big hassle, (still cheaper though), and don't know if i can be bothered. Maybe in my next life....perhaps i'll live in england for a year or two in the future, i've been in canada for over 2, looking forward to my return shortly...back to pies, Farmers Union Iced Coffee, and proper aussie fish and chips.
Thanks again for all the input,
