I bought a clubby van today! I have been wanting a van for ages but not been able to get one but I finally have.

I got it for a measly $400 and it even runs. Got the usual spare SU carbies and the like but had a quick look at it and I have no idea what the item above the alternator is. Anyone able to enlighten me? Also can anyone identify the rockers?

A hose comes up loose behind the grill into the booster? then one hose leads off and goes into a metal tube in front of the block and then 4 metal pipes lead into the block, the other hose leads into belt driven part, out the other side and into another booster. That then goes into the manifold. I thought maybe aircon (I know this isn't something released in aussie minis this old), or some early form of supercharger. Then again I may be waaaaay off the mark

I had a clubbie with one of those. If I remember rightly it was a 'polution control' thingy which I removed and gave me a bit more power.

Not sure about the rockers. Anyone?

That's standard late clubby pollution gear, not sure what that bit does exactly, but that's an air pump next to it and the idea being that it pumps air into the ports to lower emissions, takes valuable horsepower to run it though

The look just like standard sintered rockers...

The rockers look the same as mine and as the good doc says they are a POS because they don't have bushes. The pump is the air induction for polution control. I think it is to help burn the fuel better so it don't go out the exhaust half burned?

Air pump was added to comply with ADR 27A or whatever. Back then emissions were measured as % (maybe still are, I dunno). Anyhow, by injecting air into the exhaust ports it dilutes the emissions in the exhaust, giving a lower reading. Also acts as an afterburner too as ronniemac says.

These days many have been flung away, as spare parts and new pumps are NLA. And you gain a HP ot 2 by not having it....

in that first picture how did you manage to take the picture when both hands are clearly in view?
i bet you a hit with the ladies if i know what you used to take the picture?

as doc said air pump which you can take off and sell to someone who wants to build a spec 100% original motor and as there are not avialable anymore im sure thay are worth a bit to the right buyer.

nice buy for a couple of smackers and im sure it would come up great with a good lick of paint etc.

By removing the pollution gear you are n fact making your van tachnically illegal. Come on guys, if your gonna give advice give them all the facts. The pollution gear was introduced as an ADR regulation. Now many many cars have had them removed, but that doesn't mean that it isn't illegal.

Yeah Yeah i know i am a bit over the top with the legal issues, but the fact is by you giving advice to say just take it out makes you and poeee liable. State all the facts and your not

Anonymous moderation means the agro that is built up towards the mods isn't aimed at an individual (fewer "Makk" attacks). Less stress for mods means less moderator "retirements".

The legal issues are expungued when the equipment is no longer available. I had this out with the RTA in Queanbehole. I said(rather smartly i must admit...) if the motor vehicle inspectors could find one in working order, I would instal it. Hence now my clubby is registered and has been since 2000. As long as your charcoal canister is hooked up(many arent..) they are happy with ADR 27. The air pump system had a life of about a week(!!) when the whole shebang would seize and rendered useless.

Then that said, there are the pricks out there that demand that the gear be in situ(even though it doesn't work!!!)to satisfy ADR 27 but it is a pointless endeavour.

I would add that the last Mokes didn't get it, as they were `commercial' (so is a van?) it was deemed not a necessary fitment.

On that note , just check on the compliance plate and see if it is the original motor , maybe someone's swapped it at some stage with a late clubby sedan ? Might be worth investigating and if you can prove it came from another vehicle then you definitely don't have to bother with it .
